Kenya Cup Week 1

It is actually a major climb down from the Super Series. From a ground full of spectators, now we only have the odd 20 or so at each ground shouting insults at both the players and the referee. Anyway, for me Mean Machine's win against Mwamba was an upset. Mwamba are a very solid team and may have underrated Machine and got punished for it. I also think Machine have played for many years without a committed coach. When Benjamin Ayimba took over briefly last year, they quickly made the Enterprise Cup finals. With National Coach "Tank" Otieno there now, who knows? It may be the resurgence of Mean Machine.

I always expected Nakuru to be tough so the result against Nondies was expected. Last year Nakuru won their first three matches against KCB, Impala and Nondies in a row! Quins were always going to beat Strathmore though I hear with 20 minutes to go, the scores were tied. Mombasa, well I can't say much, but something needs to be done to address the rugby situation there. As the only rugby club in Coast Province, they should be key to the KRFU's development agenda for rugby countrywide.

With these first round results, it is clear that the league will not be a two or three horse race affair this year. There are at least five contenders for the crown. The team that ultimately loses out in the race is the team with most players in the National team. Isn't that ironical?
