sevens tournaments have been tossed out of the new Western Union
Sevens Circuit.
The architects of the move KRFU Secretary General Sabwa, GM Auka,
Director Ombisi and Development Officer Fred Ollows moved swiftly with
the backing of the sponsor to lock out the two outspoken clubs.
Mwamba have over the years been vocal about the way they have been
(mis)treated by the KRFU especially as their playes have often been
forced to choose between club and country to the detriment of the
clubs officials. Kulabu had hoped with Rombo on the board this would
take a new direction. It definitely has as Rombo was kept in the dark
on this move.
KRFU clique have played their fast card in what seems to be a move to
clip Michael Muthee Mwangi's run for the chairmanship next year. The
clique also hope that Rombo in annoyance will quit the Board as
hurdles being kept in his way as he tries to carry out his duties as
15's director. Kulabu will meet in the next few days and chart the
next course of action.
Quins on the other hand are being punished presumably for the failed
Heinekken sponsorship during the recent Bamburi Super Rugby Series and
their continued association with KBL over the renovated clubhouse.
Also the usual wars have continued escalated as Quins Feeldog Jalango
has continously kept the KRFU on their toes since assuming leadership
of Quins.
Impala and KCB have already been promised as the new additions to the
circuit. Impala will want to use it as a fundraiser (sic) for
Singapore Sevens while KCB are looking for other income which does not
directly coming from the bank which will be in the control of the
officials. With Wangila and Owiro James out of the way a cash cow
opportunity arises.
It must be clealry noted that 2 officials/directors of the Board with
affilliation to Impala and KCB directly are employees of Postbank
Western Union. These are directors William Ombisi and Innocent Moturi.
Need Kulabu say any more? It is a well known fact of late that KRFU is
a mismanaged organisation especially where sponsors money is
concerned. 101.7 FM is a clear example.

Before the so called National Sevens Circuit, there were only 3 sevens tournaments run by clubs without support from the union. These were driftwood, kabeberi and christiz. Now KRFU is trying to kill 2 of them after milking them for their worth over the last 10 yearz. Remember, KRFU took a shortcut and incorporated those tournaments into the sevens circuit to get it up and running. Now the circuit is successful and they can get sponsors, they are kicking guys out.. Total luck of gratitude I tell you.
Wow.
Christie Sevens has always been a hallmark of 7s in Kenya. I have fond memories from my younger days.
As for Kabeberi, it is most certainly a disgrace to his memory.
Why is it out of the question to actually Revamp these tournaments instead of kicking them out?
Also, could someone who reads this blog, (Or the Authors) please list the stops in the so called 7s circuit?
I recommend:
1) Accounts of the Union be scrutinised for accountability and transparency in its finances, and investigated for unethical and legal practises of diverting funds into individual pockets.
2) The conduct of Frank Sabwa the Secretary of Kenya Rugby, and Fred Ollows the Development Manager should be probed for:
Misleading the press and public on what was really going on.
Cancelling the ticket for the medical personnel whom had been paid for and by this action putting the well being of the children in jeopardy.
declining to listen to the team manager and I that the health and safety of the boys was at risk and instead siding with a dodgy travel agent
The functions of the development manager need to be redefined and responsibility toned down to give room for rugby in the country to grow.
The ministry of Education, the commissioner of Sports and the Kenya anti Corruption Authority being independent bodies should look into this particular case and punish the people responsible.
The relationship between Fred Ollows the Development Manager, Frank Sabwa the Secretary of the Union, Patrick of A.G.M tours and travels, and Morris of Emirates Airlines needs to be investigated and punished to serve as an example to other sports administrators to respect the institution they work for and the youth of this country.
Parents and principles of schools should not allow their children to be released to any official of the Kenya Rugby Football Union until they are clear that the highest standards of safety, health and coaching will be met. They also need to look at the qualifications of the coaching staff who will be handling their children.
With the strength and organization at Quins, Christies may even get more publicity than the circuit!
Kabeberi - Its in Mwambas hands now, lets hope it does not die like Gestetner and RAF sevens.
The union should be made to explain the reasons for their actions as it always seems to be aimed at working against development of rugby in the country
Well I guess the natives have resorted to their incurable state of snivelling thieves and miscreants. Down with this pestilence ! RED CARD KRFU!
This is basically a sponsorship fiasco. Quins are able to secure a sponsorship that the union envy's. As a result IRB (sic) feel bad about it and get their chairman to inject a couple on millions in their club to try to match up Quins. But Quins are not trying to match up anyone, they are simply doing their job and they go ahead and even get a media partner (similar to the some Super 14 sides who have a radio station as a sub-sponsor).
IRB (sic) feel bad and complain to the Union that Quins are getting too much media publicity.
The Union organize a 15s international that is similar to a Damu Pevu bottom of the table clash.
Enough is enough the union realize that Nivea for Men will get more publicity than Western Union if Christies is part of the circuit!
So... just get rid of Christies! Problem is, are the clubs and fans willing to stay away! What if Quins have prize money? what if they have a marketing plan (something the union do not have for the other tournaments...)
Ah, and IRB (sic) realize that Floodlights is dying and they need a new fundraiser!
I'm hoping Mwamba and Quins will rise above petty politics and believe, sorry know, that they do more for the development of rugby than the Union and organise Kabeberi and Christie's. Even if these tournaments are outside the 7's curcuit, they serve to develop OUR talent in Kenya and honour some great names that have passed
I say.. screw the petty politics. Quins and Mwamba to organise their parallel tournaments with prize money and have invitational sides. Kabeberi was in memory of a Kenyan rugby player. mwamba Should not abandon their own. Let the union "develop" rugby through methods they think they know. And let them crawl back once they fail.
Clubs must get rid of AuKa Gecheo, Fred Ollows and Frank Sabwa. The three are embezzling money from the Union. GM shamelessly sleeps around the other two create fiction to fleece money.
Let other clubs start their tournaz first, then ask for inclusion in the circuit. Don't put the cart in front of the horse!! ahhh.. or better still, let KRU host it's own tourna!!
To paraphrase Obama on his firing of McChrystal, divergence of opinion is expected and encouraged. Pettiness however, will not be tolerated. The so called Union has stooped to the level of pettiness.
