IRB 7's Scotland : Wales beat Kenya in Bowl Final

Kenya 7's journey in this years IRB 7's circuit ended with a 26-10
loss to Wales in the Edinburgh bowl final. Lack of skills and
technique thoroughly exposed Shujaa in this tournament leaving the
Coach Ayimba with an overflowing bowl of thoughts for both his and the
Shujaa team's future.

Earlier Kenya had beaten USA 17-12 in the bowl semi-final. Collins
Injera scored the winning 'golden score' try in sudden death
extra-time. The 2009 IRB 7's top try scorer had a tournament he would
rather forget in a hurry. Coach Ayimba shuffled him around and kept
looking for a position for him to play rather than drop him
altogether.

Kenya now return home at 2pm Tuesday to prepare for the Safaricom
Safari Sevens where they hope to salvage some pride for their deeply
wounded status. Hopefully a new crop of players will emerge.

Congratulations to Samoa the new IRB 7's 2010 champions who also won
Edinburgh 7's. Kenya finished a disappointing 8th with 52 points. New
Zealand, Australia, Fiji, England, South Africa and Argentina were
placed in that order between Samoa and Kenya.

Edinburgh Sevens Update - Kenya win 12-0 over Russia

An error prone affair for both teams, but redemption for us. We now proceed to the bowl semis where we will meet the United States. Try scorers Horace Otieno and Biko Adema.

IRB 7's Scotland : France add to Kenya's misery with 28-5 whipping

France 28 Kenya 5. Dreadful dreary dead performance. 3 games 3 losses.
This is the worst performance of the year. Leon Adongo tried but to no
avail. Bowl it is.

IRB 7's Scotland : Argentina 26 Kenya 14

Clueless Benjamin Ayimba saw his charges Kenya 7's lose 26-14 to
Argentina and proceed to the bowl where it seems our fate is placed.
The boys looked ordinarily pathetic once again and the World Cup 7's
semi-finalists were a disappointment to note.

That the team has shockingly underperformed is unbelivable but not
totally unexpected. With the same starting line up for two years this
was definitely bound to happen. No X factor anymore Kenya have
regressed in the last four tournaments at an alarming rate.

KRFU should address the issue by relieving Ayimba from tommorrow and
appointing in place Felix Ochieng and Mitch Ocholla two astute coaches
and tacticians. If this is not done the Safaricom Safari Sevens and
Commonwealth Games will be huge disasters.

Ayimba has previously done well but it is time for him (and Omwela) to
say goodbye deservedly.

IRB 7's Scotland: Samoa thrash Kenya 42-5

The old Kenya is back. Kenya 7's received a thorough 42-5 hiding from
top season team Samoa. We looked a sorry team and if we are not
careful our core team status could disappear if our performances
remain unconvincing.

Tactically we attempted to slightly change the team. Leon Adongo
opened the scores for Kenya and was suddenly withdrawn at the break.
Our stars Collins Injera and brother Humphrey Kayange are finally
showing signs of burnout. This is sad. Lavin Asego is also looking
tired and Victor Sudi should play 15's only. Biko Adema seems to be
another Nato Simiyu in the making as he fails to step up at this
level.

Truth of the matter is Coach Benjamin Ayimba needs to step aside and
let someone else take the reigns. (Tank Otieno as well now that we are
on the topic). Will Richard 'Kibaki' Omwela show Ayimba the door or
will he hide under the fence as usual?

I hope Kenya 7's make me eat my words as I want Kenya 7's to do well
in this final leg of the IRB sevens series.

Jared Owinyo. The most curious omission. Has had a great two seasons at quins where he has been in outstanding form. From clearing out rucks, cleaning dirty ball, to line out jumping, he stands out from all the locks.

Moses Kola. Mr dependable. More calm under pressure at the base. Mike mugo most unimaginative halfback in the game. cracked under pressure of faisal gamma, and made lots of blind passes to no one. Has a long way to go for him before he is ready for international exposure.

Edwin Machanje. Was devastating with ball in hand, strongest ball carrying lock, Kopondo’s ball presentation and retention is too poor in contact which all locks should be strongest at.

Frank Ngong. Very busy around the base and game awareness is very high, also versatile in all front row positions, and has valuable experience.

Jeff Ojwach. Always breaks the line and either offloads or secures the ball perfectly, gets the edge over Oimbo for his work rate defensively.

Richmond Baraza. Thrive in ball carrying in traffic. Very direct and effective ball carrier.
My squad is biased towards and they outnumber the back being 20 and backs 15. We already have experienced backs and should only tinker with the combination due to expected match conditions or current form. Agunda gets my nod over Simiyu due to his tighter defensive game. My most exciting back in recent weeks has been Calvins biko, who is knocking on the door of a serious look in, and call up, and will no doubt excite if he gets game time. Charles Kanyi gets the nod over Mike mugo as my third scrum half due to his eye for the gap, his week passing notwithstanding.

If I was the coach I would focus on the pack. We always seem to be rucked out of the game and outmuscled at breakdown points. Ugandan loose forwards are always hungrier for the ball and turn over our ball at will. Our line outs are always a disaster, with no variations from the norm. If we can match their tight five secure our rucks and aim for quick clean balls so the next play is always fluent and as per plan. We seem to always go too high on the tackles around the base giving time for support to arrive. Our lineout play seems to be practiced for only a week before the game. If our pack plays as a unit akin to the manner lightweight Strathmore pack plays then we should have an easy game.
It all will depend on the work the coaches do with the players at the end. I wish them the best selection and work of coaching thereafter.

Weekend Games

No matches so to speak this weekend. However, the National Fifteens team will be holding trials from 2.00 p.m. at Impala Club. The more the merrier and I believe the bar will be open so we can get into the Safaricom Sevens mode.

The squad is divided into Probables and Possibles with the same pool of substitutes. Of note is the absence of Sevens players in the squad. I wonder if some peoples efforts will have been in vain.

Probables:
15.Vincent Mose (Impala), 14.Sidney Ashioya (Quins), 13.David Ambunya (Quins), 12.Patrice Agunda (Quins), 11.Peter Abuoga (Quins), 10.Nato Simiyu (Impala), 9.Peter Mutai (KCB), 8.Paul Oimbo (Impala), 7.David Mogere (Quins), 6.Ben Nyambu (Nondies),5.Mike Aung (Nondies), 4.Wilson Kopondo (Mean Machine), 3.Daniel Kiptoo (Quins), 2.Vincent Ongera (Quins), 1.Edwin Alubaka (KCB)

Safari Sevens hit by withdrawals

Georgia, Botswana and Morocco have decided to give this years former
Tusker Safari Sevens now known as Safaricom Safari Sevens a miss.
Their withdrawal is a big blow to a tournament that prides itself as
being the premier sevens tournament on the continent and yet despite
the over 40M sponsorship from various sponsors the Safari Sevens
still doesn't offer a single shilling as prize money. Rwanda who were
on standby and Shujaa will be included. Their is no place for
Strathmore Leos the national sevens champions and Kenya Harlequins in
this years event.

Weekly Ramble

Sorry guys, been away traveling for some time. It is hard to imagine places in this world with scarce internet availability.

Anyway, in my absence, I don't think too much has changed. I sounded the warning bells before the IRB Circuit started but as usual people just thought I was being negative. This post summed up my thoughts and nothing has changed. That we have the most experienced squad in the circuit and are not even able to put up a finals appearance should mean something, at least to the people that matter. I sympathise with coach Benjamin Ayimba as he is the man in the cross hairs. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Does experience count for anything then, in the Seven a side game? Or is it the freshness of players? If experience counts for nothing, then of what use is Ben Gollings, who has played in all rounds of the circuit since inception? And if it does, what does it matter that we have the most in our side? Is it then a lack of fresh players, or a lack of fresh ideas?

Any time the squad needs to take part in an event, it is upon the coach to select the best available players! This is also a requirement from the IRB itself. How then can he justify leaving fully fit, experienced and competent players for the sake of trying out some new, upcoming talent? It is a fact, the players in the team are in fact the best and fittest players by miles in the country! What choice then does he have? I really hate to be in his shoes and for sure, the knives are already out.

Personally I prefer not to use knives. I was taught a long time ago, the only person you fire is a thief. The others you can help/train. But if the incumbent also resists being trained, his choices become less and less.

On the playing side we need to provide more for the players, perhaps motivate them more. And we need to avail more opportunities for them. Galivanting round the world as a mere fan when you have the mandate and opportunities to tie up professional or semi professional contracts for players is a no-no. And don't let someone tell me we don't have good enough players. We currently have several players, quite well known, earning a decent living from playing rugby in other countries, definitely more than they earn here. And as our stature falls more and more, even the few opportunities available here will quickly dry up. Or maybe we also don't want these players to leave. Imagine a Kenya Sevens without Tall, or Collo, or Lavin, or Namcos.. Who would be the first to leave them out of the team, even if for greener pastures? We basically need to ensure that after the Sevens team, a player has a better place to go, or all will have been in vain. Only then can we create space for new talent!

But as usual these will be dismissed as the ramblings of a disgruntled blogger. Well one needs a vision to attain a dream, and where vision lacks a whip or the sack will suffice. And that sadly is what I feel we're lacking.

PS: The late Joshua Gathumbi gets laid to rest today. Let us pray for the eternal repose of his soul. Will surely be missed and was a great talent.

Safaricom Sevens Entrants Finalised

Sixteen teams have tentatively confirmed participation in this years edition of the Safaricom Sevens. Top seeds of course are Kenya followed by last years' runners up the Emerging Boks. Interestingly, Argentina are seeded third and unknown entity Hamilton Raiders fourth. Eight African sides are included in the draw for the event that also serves as a pseudo African Sevens Championship.

The pools are as follows.

POOL A
POOL B
POOL C
POOL D
Kenya
Emerging Boks Argentina
Hamilton Raiders
Les Bleus
Bristol
Zimbabwe
Ponsonby
Zambia
Namibia
Grenoble
Uganda
Georgia
Tanzania
Morocco
Botswana

You can find the Emerging Boks team here. Also, this years nominees for the IRB Sevens Player of the year here. Interesting once more to see who will win. The playmaker, the inspiration, the mule or the flyer. Last year left us disappointed in the choice.

state of the game

Will we win in Scotland? No way. Let’s be realistic. We will struggle in the bowl and shield competitions.
The only tournament where we can hope to be in the final is the safari sevens where we will meet as usual, very low caliber competition in the likes of Tanzania, Morocco, Namibia, Zambia, alongside the normal Club and University sides from NZ, UK and SA.
We can sing at the top of our voices or shout as we want; the squad will have the same old faces in Scotland. Australia had a completely new squad and boy didn’t they excite. If only our coach can mix new blood with his experienced hands we would have something exciting as well. This is the perfect time to give young blood a chance to dazzle under the cover of the dependable watch of his old guard.
In the near future i foresee a scenario where we will be caught pants down due to non availability of certain players and the coach will cry to heaven when that happens. Ask the coach to start a game without Khayange, Asego and Injera against Papua New Guinea and he will shit in his pants, because without them his coaching frailties will be clear to all.
If by chance we qualify within our first two pool games in Scotland, he should field his perennial water boys in the entire third game as there are never any easy games in the quarter final, and we also seem to play better against the top seeds anyway.
But knowing the coach we have, all this is like playing the guitar to a goat.

fanatical cheerleader of the Kenya 7's team following them everywhere
they play in the IRB 7's circuit.

Melbourne Rebels shopping for Kayange and Injera

According to website www.greenandgoldrugby.com the new Super 15
franchise from Australia could be looking to sign brothers Humphrey
Kayange and Collins Injera for next years competition which will be
expanded to Super 15.

Weekend Games

The Bamburi Rugby Super Series enters the penultimate weekend with half the teams out of the running. What remains now is the run to the trophy and the prize money. In the first match at 2.00 p.m. SDV Transami Cheetahs will take on Kampala Coach Victoria and in the second match at 4.00 p.m. UAP Rhinos take on the Lions. I see Cheetahs winning over Victoria by 10 points and the second game will be tough, but Rhinos will prevail by 8 points.

The Saint Mary's Schools Blackrock festival also takes place at Saint Mary's School from 9.00 a.m. on Saturday. The perfect hunting ground for the clubs for future talent (if such a thing does happen).

Do have a good weekend. Don't let the weather get you down. Remember, there will always be sunshine after the rain (in more ways than one). You can still vote on our poll on the left pane.

Saints' Blackrock Festival This Weekend

The draw for the above event will be held tomorrow at the school. Thirty six teams have confirmed participation. Below I reproduce verbatim the press release from the organisers.

It’s back, and this year it’s bigger and more competitive than ever before; it’s the annual St. Mary’s Blackrock Rugby Festival, East & Central Africa’s biggest high school rugby tournament. With barely two weeks to go before the kickoff, tournament organizers have confirmed a record total of 36 teams (24 boys & 12 girls).

This year’s tournament, the 27th edition, will take place on Saturday, May 15th, at the school’s expansive Landsdown Road field from 9am to 6pm. Bringing together several secondary school rugby teams to show their brawn, resilience and brain, Blackrock is an event that is key in highlighting Kenya's finest rugby talent. The St. Mary’s Blackrock Rugby festival was started way back in 1983 by Father Cormac O’Brachlain, the Headmaster at the time. As always, entrance to the event is free as it continues to foster and grow the popularity of the game of rugby.

The Saints Blackrock festival has for the past 26 years been the nurturing ground of Kenya’s top rugby players. Virtually the entire top creame of Kenya’s rugby elite, past and present, have honed their skills at the prestigious tournament. It is at the Blackrock festival that Kenya’s future rugby stars are identified, nurtured and given the platform to shine. Last year’s MVP and former Saints star play, David Ambunya, 19, (Kenya Harlequins RFC) is testament just how the tournament can elevate a student-athlete’s status in just one short year. This year, the CHAT Awards Teeniez Athlete of the Year winner traded his Saints white & blue strip for that of top Kenyan rugby club Kenya Harlequins RFC. At the culmination of Kenya’s top club rugby tournament, the Kenya Cup, Ambunya was voted MVP in the exhilarating final match between his club and KCB. Other Blackrock Rugby Festival MVP’s include; Allan Hicks, Ian Simiyu and Biko Adema. Who will be this year’s MVP at the St. Mary’s Blackrock festival?

Each game of the round-robin style tournament is twenty minutes, with fast and intense competition. Watching some of the quickest and most agile high school athletes in Kenya’s, spectators are entertained by the fast paced, high scoring games, as well as the electric atmosphere created by the avid fans. This year, 24 of rugby’s heaviest hitters and 12 pioneering girls’ schools will go head to head in an adrenaline-packed tournament.

Tournament coordinator, Mr. Gregory Sang’, expects a tough draw not just for his Saints boys, but for all participating teams. In the words of the sports administrator, “gone are the days when teams would get draws and refer to them as walk over’s – we have seen that on a good day, even schools like Kangaru High can beat any team in the country…”

Teams Confirmed for 2010 Event

Boys’ Teams; St. Mary’s School (2 teams), Upper Hill (2 teams), Strathmore, Nairobi School, Lenana School, Highway, RVA (2 teams), Dagoretti, Mutuini, Muhuri Muchiri, Ofafa Jericho, Jamhuri, Sunshine, Hillcrest, Rosslyn Academy, Ruthimitu, MFA, Mutungoni, Uhuru, NPC, Juja Preparatory

Girls’ Teams; Maono Educational Centre, Raila Educational Centre, State House Girls, Ruthimitu, Hidden Talent Academy, Nile Road, Saint Martins, Precious Blood Girls’, Saint Teresa’s Girls, Buru Buru Girls, Crescent Girls, Nembu Girls

Bamburi Rugby Series - Match Day 3 Results

Not much went against the script. The Sharks got shell shocked and gave the Cheetahs too much respect. By the time they realised they could do it it was too late and the Cheetahs held on. The Lions did what they needed to do and so too the Rhinos. The Buffaloes failed to break their duck in Kampala and also left the tournament in the dead rubber match of the day.

This weekend will now be the semi finals with Cheetahs meeting Victoria in the first match and Rhinos meeting Lions in the second match. The rest of the teams take a bow and become spectators.

Do have a good week.

Weekend Games

Match Day 3 of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series and barring any hiccups, all should go well. Two teams in Pool B have already secured their semi finals spot and will only be fighting it out to see who tops the pool UAP Rhinos host Kampala Coach Victoria in Nakuru and Rwenzori will host Mumias Sugar Buffaloes in Kampala for the wooden spoon of the pool.

And as much as SDV Transami Cheetahs seem to have secured their place in the semis with two wins, a win by both Nguvu Sharks and Lions may jeopardise this position as now three teams will be on two wins each. Lions must than pile as much points as possible in Arusha whilst it is a win at all cost for the Sharks against the Cheetahs. Interesting stuff.

The Nairobi match will kick off at 4.00 p.m. and will be live on Supersport. And please take time to vote in our poll on the left.

Weekly Ramble

Not much on my mind, just the usual. Wondering when the mismanagement will stop. I won't say much on the treatment of the traveling teams during the Bamburi Rugby Super Series. Just that more due diligence should be done and there should be ways to make sponsors accountable for their promises or actions, say in the way of a performance bond, held with a bank and encashed only when breach is committed by one of the parties, just a thought.

This week the media blitz for the Safaricom Sevens begins and ironic for two things. First, that the filming of the ads was done immediately the pitch was "declared closed for appraisal" and suffice to say the amount of damage done in the three days of filming was quite considerable. Secondly, it got me looking around for more information on the sevens and there it became interesting. And I wondered, what benefits a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul (sic)? (Ruggerbug's the poet, not me).

From this

To this?I had a feeling that this would happen, but not to this extent. A logo/brand built over 14 years is lost in a flash, for the sake of money. And when I started thinking about money, I came to notice something else. The Bamburi Rugby Super Series site is redirecting to a subdomain on the main KRFU site (from www.rugbysuperseries.com to www.superseries.kenyarfu.com). Suddenly some sanity and and attempt to take control of resources that should belong to the union. I also inadvertently decided to visit http://safaricomsevens.com and lo and behold, a site loaded. Nothing to do with the sevens, but a site all the same. And I became curious. Do some people have more information than we do? I checked www.safaricomsevens.co.ke. This now redirects to www.safarisevens.com. So what is happening here? A whole load of confusion and no actual direction. For those who know how, please check the registrants for all the above websites and you will see people trying to find ways to worm themselves into the system and perhaps benefit from being the owners of various instruments that I believe should be the sole preserve of the Union, its trustees or the clubs (the registration dates also tell a tale and if you're keen enough, the registrant is different but the server hosting the domain is the same!)

PS: I've been on their side too much today. With all the media blitz already going on by Safaricom, there is an ominous silence emanating from the sole source of all media information from the official office!

KRFU engaging in dubious sponsorship deals

In their pursuit of sponsors KRFU seems to have zealously pursued some
questionable characters and brought them aboard their so called
'Friends of Kenya Rugby' bedroom. This time the sponsor in bed with
KRFU is Kampala Coach. This entity has signed up yet again with KRFU
for the Bamburi Super Series Rugby. And what a disater and fiasco of
embarrassment it has been. This past weekend saw players stranded in
Nairobi to Arusha, Kampala to Nairobi and Mumias to Kampala. The
Rhinos and Uganda ll (Victoria) suffered the most at the hands of this
dubious bus company. Promises of free World Cup tickets in South
Africa seem to have compromised the KRFU and Bamburi organisers to
give exclusive transportation rights to Kampala Coach. A top KRFU
official known for engaging in reckless previous transport and travel
arrangements involving Kenya teams is said to have vigorously fronted
for Kampala Coach to get the deal. Last year Kampala Coach did abandon
a team that was going to play in the local sevens circuit not once but
twice times. Just who are this Kampala Coach and why do they want to
destroy Kenya Rugby? How much money has changed hands here? Say NO to
Kampala Coach and YES to better transport and player welfare.

Bamburi Rugby Series - Match Day 2 Results

I believe much better in terms of entertainment value. The Lions woke up and defeated the Nguvu Sharks 20-12. SDV Transami Cheetahs steamrolled over M Bank Twigas 57-0. Victoria overcame Mumias Sugar Buffales 26-3 and UAP Rhinos edged Rwenzori 23-22.

Prescott Cup

Once a upon a time the Prescott Cup was a prestigious school tournament. But has the new format, where it has gone regional and expanded to 24 teams, watered down its prestiege and relevance? For instance how come RVA has not been pooled among the Rift Valley teams if the intention was to take the cup regional?

Weekend Games

Saturday sees Round 2 of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series. This weekend we hope no one way games. Mumias Sugar Buffaloes host Victoria in Mumias, Rwenzori host UAP Rhinos in Kampala, Nguvu Sharks play Lions in Nairobi and M Bank Twigas play Cheetahs in Arusha.

Result here after the games. Please take time to vote on our poll on the left. Have a good weekend.
