Andy Robinson has named his 32-man squad that will take part in a three day training camp at St Andrews before next month's Six Nations. The head coach has picked three uncapped players in the squad, the trio have been promoted from Scotland's A side that beat the USA in November. The three are 23 year old Bath back Jack Cuthbert, 24 year old prop Jon Welsh and 20 year old loose forward Robert Harley. Robinson will be taking a close look at the trio ahead of naming his final squad that will line-up against France on February 5th.
Returning to the squad after missing the autumn test series is Johnnie Beattie, after the number eight recovered from shoulder surgery. He'll be joined by Simon Danielli, who returns from a similar injury to Beattie and also missed the November internationals. Injury has robbed Robinson of the services of Chris Cusiter, Graeme Morrison, Alasdair Dickinson, Jim Hamilton and Phil Godman, who will all miss out on the tournament and the 6 Nations betting suggests they now face an uphill struggle.
Last year's tournament was another mixed bag for the Scots, losses against Italy, France and Wales were followed by a draw against England, before finishing strongly to narrowly beat Ireland in the final match. Since then Robinson has found some consistency and Scotland had a good year beating Argentina away twice before beating Samoa and world champions South Africa.
If Scotland get stop losing to Italy and not take so long to settle in the tournament, then they could be a dark horse for success this year.
