is how come no sponsorship has been gotten for both Kenya Cup and the
Eric Shirley Shield.
That the KRFU works hard or gets others to work hard for it to get
sponsorship for some of its events but not its own league is a mystery
of all sorts.
Safaricom, Kenya Airways and Bamburi are just niche sponsors yet the
majority of players in the league countrywide are not impacted by any
of their money.
Something definitely is amiss when it comes to running the league.
Prestigious it is and Pennyless it is. Maybe the need to finish the
Kenya Airways tickets with non-entities travelling and hobnobbing at
IRB Sevens events is more important to the KRFU.

With the kind of officials occupying the KRU secretariat it is no wonder that there is no sponsorship for the leagues. Preparing a document that sells the league to a sponsor means putting in some hard work and that is anathema to them.
The leagues offer a bigger package to sponsors than the one weekend Safari Sevens or the five week Super Series. They will however only be made appealing if there is an element of build up to a climax as well as trickle down of sponsorship resources right down to the players.
The foregoing would probably mean a league format that has a one off fixture against each club with semis and finals. This would have a maximum 12 week season for a 10 team Kenya Cup for example.
The KRU's model of seeking sponsorship is warped. They first want to fund their operations, then give the sponsor mileage before considering any quid pro quo for the key contributors to the product they are selling, to whit, the clubs.
A case in point is the Sevens Circuit - Ksh 4 million in sponsorship, only Ksh 1 million to host clubs and Ksh 250,000 in prize money with the rest going into 'publicity and management'. The portion going to host clubs is sometimes not even paid before the event. In the last circuit, one club got paid a full three months after the end of the circuit.
The KRU often refers to a past attempt to have single venues for Kenya Cup fixtures with an aim of attracting television coverage. Clubs are blamed for not buying into this. The true picture is that nothing was offered to the clubs, rather, they would lose the gate takings, meagre as they are in some cases in exchange for some future benefit when television money came in.
The foregoing model is wrong as the KRU seeks to derive all commercial benefit from the game without reverting anything back to the creators of the product.
An ideal model would be one where firstly a leagues committee formed of participating clubs is formed to structure a package that could be sold to sponsors. This package would include providing the basic necessities to all clubs and would involve a payment (in tranches) of a fixed amount per year to all clubs in the competition. The KRU would get paid an amount to cover administration of the league.
If the foregoing model is adopted then the distribution of sponsor funds would be flipped with a larger proportion going down to the clubs.Assuming that the top league had the biggest payout, the promotion leagues below would be more competitive leagues as teams would be fighting to get to the big money.
Octotheories :). After coaching theories, now marketing theories haha. Clearly, you have never looked for money for anything from the Kenya market. Where in the world has a document ever sold anything?
its very hard to hide behind names Absaloms Juma.... its even more rediculous when you repeat word for word what you said in a club reps meeting....
