Today is the Kenya Rugby Union Annual General Meeting and part of the agenda will be the election of new office bearers. That the long serving chairman Richard Omwela is up for re-election means all focus will be on this one aspect and other issues brushed over. Equally important are the KRU finances for the previous year and close scrutiny must be paid to these as there is some clever accounting that goes on there. Sticking out like a sore thumb is that the mother entity does not report accounts for it's children, i.e. The Kenya Rugby Limited that handles commercial transactions on behalf of the KRU. Are the directors of this company there by name or by position, and does that mean if they leave office, they leave those positions as well? Can the KRU be in the red whilst an affiliate company is heavily in the black? These are at least some of the questions that should form part of the discussion.
For me I hold no endearment to any of the candidates, but suffice to say we should start asking our officials to be accountable to the clubs, who are the real owners of the Union. Rule by decree is fast losing flavour and overall rebellion as being seen in the Arab World will soon take root everywhere. The West is fast fading as a shining example and the East offers no solutions, but plenty of opportunities. But I digress as usual.
Key to me would be the return to traditional values of the game. Riding on a rollercoaster is fun, but at some point it too stops. Poignant to me is that we have no idea what has led to the
relative success of the Sevens team, for if we did, what would be so hard about replicating it at fifteens level? And don't give me the age old money story for as I believe, that's what the board is primarily there for, to find the money! I believe strongly in building grassroots, for sustainability and this is where we must focus. And in ensuring the game is played at a high level countrywide. That the game has been spread I will not challenge, but that it is only at junior level is a shame. That these players either have nowhere to go after school, or are unwilling to join what is existing speaks volumes and that we have no structures at national level to monitor or supervise the growth of the game is also a shame. You lose no control by delegating structures, but you strengthen your own base. And irrespective of who takes control at the helm, we have to find a way to
control guide their agenda!
You can read more about who is standing for what
here. To all candidates, best of luck from me. Where you shine, I will illuminate, but same for where you fail!

The whole lot are in office illegally. After ratifying the new constitution, there were no transitional clauses in it so under what constitution are they serving! Elections should have been held immediately after the ratification for all the positions.
Muthee looks to have an upper hand in terms of club support. Omwela no chance, but Max's credentials makes him best suited for the job.
Dataminer i beg to differ on your assessment of Kenya XVs compared to Kenya 7s.
Firstly Kenya Xvs has won trophy's and as late as last year won both Elgon Cup and Victoria Cup with near zero support from Union and fans in some cases (Zim game at home is a case in point).
Secondly 7s get heaven and earth and are still not delivering even with the so called stalwarts, mwamba 4, core players etc
Thirdly imagine if XVs was given the same airtime as 7s with church and lunch send offs, allowances, salaries, tracksuits (yes imagine), sponsorship etc where would they be?
If the GM cant get sponsorship sack him and if the Union cant kit its national team and pay them commensurate with the tasks at hand, vote them out!!!!
Kenya Xvs play some very hard fixtures ( world cup bound Namibia)this year but what has the Union done so far?????
Max as Anonymous @ 11.25am supported, should be put to task as to what he and his sidekick Bonnie did and are still doing to a former Kenya Cup side in USIU then you will change your mind.
Where i do agree with you Dataminer is that all 3 candidates are clueless as to where we want to go in the future of XVs rugby and indeed any form of rugby and that there still is alot of room for improvement.
There is a generation ( 35-45) that is quiet and should be running for posts to rid us of these geriatrics but i wonder where they are( actually i know where they are)?
max is a joker - no hope
@Pedantic - I don't think we have said anything different, just in different ways. Can the KRU tell us what made the XV's perform last season and not others? That was my point...
On the missing generation, I also rue their absence. A feeling of indebtedness to them, I don't know what for but they leave a huge gap and are possibly to blame for the missing next step!
Max is the change Kenya rugby needs. He is indeed a breathe of fresh air that needs to be introduced to our structures
Mwangi Muthee is the worst thing that can happen to Kenya rugby at the moment...Just ask yourselves, "What has he done for mwamba?" Mwamba is still a small team and always struggles for resources and only boasts of 4 players. Am sure the motivation for mwamba officials to elect him today is to get him off their backs. As a former chairman of the club he has failed them. Why is he buying votes and spending huge amounts of cash to get elected? He just wants to use the rugby chairmanship position as a launch pad for his 2012 parliamentary ambitions.
He also failed as a former director of 15s and what makes us believe that he will be able to handle the whole union to the great success that we all want. If mwangi is elected it would be detrimental to the game in Kenya.
stupid it was not a new constution, they were ammendments to clauses in the constitution.
Anonymous @ 1.54 FOOL.. it was a new one.. there was no replacement of clauses!!!
what about getting someone without any rugby background but with a managerial background in a sports related field and enthusiasm to promote sports. i know one person who will be vying for that seat in 5 years time. watch this space
People needed in Kenya Rugby:
Sasha Mutai
Gabriel Ouko
Shaka Kwach
Paul Odera
