Kenya Cup - Week 13

Surprise or not, Nakuru were the team of the weekend. Did not see it, but must have been quite a display to blank Mwamba that way. The rest are still waiting for Quins to stumble and with only 3 matches left in the league, someone will have to do the other one a favor, whilst still doing the business themselves.

The bottom of the table also be interesting in the last few matches so interesting times ahead. Have a good week.

Weekend Games

The fight for Kenya Cup continues though shaping out to be more interesting is the relegation battle. Here we go...

League leaders Harlequins host Mean Machine at RFUEA grounds, Kenya Commercial Bank are at home in Ruaraka to Strathmore, Nondies cross the railway line to Impala and Mwamba go to floor of the Rift Valley to face Nakuru.

Quins are on a roll and will whitewash Machine, despite struggling in the first game. Win by 20 points. KCB will also be superior to Strathmore, bonus point win for them. Nondies will be a pain to Impala, but after two tough games I don't see them holding out.. Impala by 15. Mwamba will definitely struggle against Nakuru... is there an upset in the offing? I think not. Mwamba by 8.

Do have a good weekend and do enjoy your rugby.

Safari Sevens moved to November 2011

The Safari Sevens will for the first time since its inception 16 years ago shift from its traditional month of June to November this year.

The Kenya Rugby Football Union (KRFU) confirmed on Thursday that this year’s championship will be held from November 18 to 20 at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa grounds.

The union’s chairman, Richard Omwela, said the tournament’s sponsors, Safaricom Limited, have agreed to the change of dates and hoped that the move will lure some of the world’s top cream of sevens playing nations.

Omwela said it is envisaged that the move will be productive in attracting top sevens playing nations that will be headed for the opening leg of the IRB World Sevens Circuit in Dubai.

The success of the move could act as a springboard to the union’s ambitions and bid to host one of the legs on the IRB World Sevens Circuit.

Already, the IRB has announced its intentions to upgrade the tournaments on the Circuit from eight to 10 next season.

“We have been criticised since the Safari Sevens is always held at the end of the gruelling IRB World Sevens Circuit hence it’s not suited to many IRB teams’ calendars,” said Omwela.

“There has also been concern that our national team players always looked tired after the end of the world circuit. We hope these trial dates will work and that teams will take it positively by using the event as a build up to the Dubai Sevens,” explained Omwela.

The tournament changed its name from the Tusker Safari Sevens to the Safaricom Sevens last year when the mobile telephone provider announced its three-year sponsorship.

Safaricom gave Sh25 million for last year’s action and the package will be increased by a percentage this year and next year.

While the tournament has grown in statue, it has not been able to consistently attract top nations, especially those playing in the IRB World Sevens Series.

Giants Fiji and Samoa were in Nairobi in 2008 and 2009 respectively while another IRB World Sevens Series side, France, featured in the 2006 and 2008 Safari Sevens.

Other IRB Series teams that have played at the Safari Sevens over the years include Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Japan and Namibia.

Johnson responds to Hartley criticism

England head coach Martin Johnson has responded to criticism of England hooker Dylan Hartley, and believes the Northampton man will prove his worth on the pitch.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland criticised Hartley earlier in the week and suggested that when the two teams meet, Hartley will be a weak link in the England side. The former Wasps coach criticised Hartley and said he was likely to crumble against the Welsh pack.

“He's always got a lot to say, hasn't he? Let's see what he has got to offer and how he fronts up against us.” Gatland commented

Those over at Big free bet note how Gatland was incensed with Hartley’s role in two controversial moments in the Heineken Cup ties between Hartley’s Northampton and the Cardiff Blues this season. A clash between Hartley and opposite number Gareth Williams saw both men sin binned, while Hartley also gave evidence against Richie Rees after the Welsh scrum-half was cited for gouging the Northampton man in the corresponding fixture.

But Johnson has responded to Gatland’s comments and hopes Hartley will retaliate in the best possible way. He said: “I'm confident Dylan will be fine and his temperament will hold up. He will take this in his stride.”

“It was not particularly subtle and it wasn't unexpected” added Johnson of Gatland’s attempts to undermine Hartley ahead of their Six Nations clash.

The teams meet in the Six Nations curtain raiser on February 4th, but both coaches have seen their preparations hit by injury. Johnson has seen Courtney Lawes, Tom Croft and Lewis moody withdraw through injury, will Dave Attwood and Delon Armitage are currently suspended.

Wales will be without prop Adam Jones but have been boosted by the news that Welsh record try scorer Shane Williiams will be fit for the game. Jones was described as the “cornerstone” of the Welsh national side by Welsh rugby legend Graham Price, and big free bet will likely reflect his absence in the match day odds.

Can Italy upset Ireland?

Italy and Ireland start the 2011 Six Nations Championship with different aims and expectations. The Azzurri, or at least their coach Mick Mallett, are not expecting to win every game, while the men in green believe a second Grand Slam in three years is achievable.

Ireland start their campaign against the continental teams and will expect to face France in Dublin on 13th February as table-toppers. They have an excellent record in Rome, being the only member of the old Five Nations never to have been troubled in the Italian capital.

They have won all five of their Rome Six Nations assignments, winning by a points difference of 19, 24, 11, 27 and 29 respectively. It is not the banker victory it once was, but Declan Kidney's men will be happy to starting their campaign against the Italians as they seek to shake of rustiness ahead of tougher tests.

However, Ireland's growing injury list – Tommy Bowes has joined Shane Horgan, John Hayes, Jamie Heaslip, Andrew Trimble, Rob Kearney and Geordan Murphy on the sidelines – is a debilitating one that will be hard to overcome. May of these missing men are key figures and a hungry Italy side with nothing to lose will be a stern test, even if the rugby odds suggest otherwise.

Both teams have experienced general disappointment since the end of the 2010 championship. Ireland have been twice heavily beaten by New Zealand but were narrow losers against Australia and South Africa, finishing their winter programme with a routine win over Argentina. Italy have won only once in five outings, narrowly against Fiji last time out. Anyone looking to bet on Six Nations action should remember how poor these results were.

Ireland should still have enough to get past an Italian outfit revitalised by the return of captain Sergio Parisse, but this will perhaps be their narrowest Six Nations Rome victory. A scrappy encounter beckons, which Ireland should edge by single figures.

Phillips looking over his shoulder

Wales have maintained they still have full faith in Mike Phillips despite the scrum-half recently being dropped by his club side Ospreys in their Heineken Cup match against London Irish. With Dwayne Peel returning to the Welsh squad for the first time in nearly a year, the pressure will be on Phillips to produce on the pitch from the very start of next week's Six Nations. Anyone who has placed a rugby bet on Wales will be interested to see what decision is made.

Sale Sharks number nine Peel has been named alongside Phillips and Tavis Knoyle as the three scrum-halves in the squad, all battling it out to earn their place in the starting line-up who will battle England in Cardiff next week. Welsh backs coach Rob Howley made it clear Phillips had the management's backing while also making it clear that the other scrum-halves will also be a be in the minds of those picking the team.

"I'm not concerned about Mike's form because he came on at the weekend and made an impact. But everyone is under pressure and Dwayne and Tavis will come into the selection equation," he said.

Richie Rees' 12 week ban ruled the Cardiff half-back out of the entire tournament and scrum-half has decided against appealing the suspension he received for gouging England's hooker Dylan Hartley. Whether Rees would have started as Wales' first choice number nine remain speculation but the reaction of Warren Gatland towards Hartley this week would indicate the coach is a little perturbed at the least to be without Rees.

Kenya Airways renews sponsorship for sevens team with Ksh 30M package

Kenya Airways has renewed its sponsorship flight with Kenya sevens rugby team for two more years.

The national carrier’s move comes near the end of their two-year partnership with the team during the final leg of the IRB World Sevens Series in Scotland in May.

The deal with Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) is worth Sh30 million.

KQ chief executive officer Titus Naikuni affirmed his airline’s commitment to the sevens team in their effort to grow a long-lasting relationship with the rugby fraternity.

Naikuni announced the extension of their sponsorship when he had a feel of the team’s training at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA) grounds on Tuesday.

Even though Naikuni noted the team’s slow start to this season, he was confident that they will be able rediscover their winning ways.

“We are now in the second season of our sponsorship after a successful run in 2010 and we are confident that this relationship will be taken for another period of support in coming years,” he explained.

Naikuni was to later officially commission the team that leaves on Saturday for the third and fourth legs of the IRB World Sevens Circuit in Wellington, New Zealand, and Las Vegas, USA.

England need to push on under Johnson

Three years into the job and Martin Johnson will need to prove England have gone forward under his leadership. 2011 will be the perfect chance for Johnson's side to show exactly where they stand in world rugby, firstly in the Six Nations before the World Cup later on in the year. At the end of the year Johnson won't be able to talk about his transitional side still gelling together, those excuses won't wash if he can't push on from a pretty decent 2010.

It has emerged this week that the RFU have set Johnson target of finishing the Six Nations in the top-two as they look to lay down a solid platform to mount a World Cup challenge later down the line. The RFU's chief executive John Steele confirmed the target had been set to the England management in an interview with BBC's Sportsweek.

"Given we have three home games and some momentum from the autumn we believe finishing in the top two is realistic. Third or below would be disappointing given our current position," he said.

Last year's championship started perfectly for England, winning their opening two games against Italy and Wales before losing against Ireland, drawing with the Scots and going down to Grand Slam winners France. Johnson will be hoping to carry on the form his side have shown since last year's tournament which has included wins against Australia, home and away and a decent showing in the November tests. The rugby betting odds suggest they should challenge in the Six Nations.

2003 was the last time England lifted the Six Nations trophy and that is far too long for a country with the resources that the English have at their disposal. The RFU may say that at top two finish would suffice but plenty of the England fans will be looking for their side to win the competition and re-establish themselves as the northern hemisphere's dominant force.

Weekly Ramble

Missed one last week, due to unavoidable circumstances. Or maybe lack of thoughts in my head. So today I try and air my thoughts. A new team has been named to take part in the next two legs of the HSBC IRB Sevens Rugby Circuit. Forced by circumstances, or planned all along, we are now realising the need to have a system in place. Blaming unavailability of players as I have said before is a reflection of us all as a whole and our inability to produce quality players at all levels. Following various debates in various media, where people argue who was the best or the greatest this or that, makes me wonder is it based on that era, or covering all eras? Players today are fitter, stronger, maybe faster and better conditioned to handle collisions and contact. As coaches get smarter (and I'll get killed for this), things like defensive patterns have emerged in play which means teams are able to defend together better and leave less space. Space for what? How did we measure these best players? Ability to use space, ability to create space, or ability to deny space? But I digress.

New Zealand have lost 5 of their starting 7 players to the Super Rugby competition. Good? Or bad? For me bad as we will see 5 fresh unknown people, suddenly given the opportunity to show what they have worked on for ages, on the international scene. Such a thing happened to us, and it was still bad. For different reasons though. Our fresh unknown people, in the words of the coach, let us down? They let us down or we let them down?

In as much as we are closer to the Southern Hemishphere rugby teams and we tend to follow their rugby more, I feel we should not follow their development systems or structures or programs. We have done that for ten or so years and what do we have to show? A multitude or explosion of players who have no clue what they are doing. Other than whining and bitching, methinks it is time we did something ourselves. And I'm no believer in revolutions, but evolutions. What am I talking about?

If the clubs are the bedrock of rugby in this country, and the union has failed to give even the most basic support for the clubs, i.e. by getting a sponsor for the premier league in the country, then clubs have to determine their own destiny. Since the clubs already have to find their own money, they now have to build their own players. Personally I think it is a shame for a player to be selected from a club for the national team and for him to be dismally exposed as having to skill and quickly dropped from the side. If the clubs provide quality training and quality players to the national team, half our problem is solved.... but those are only my thoughts.

Do have a good rest of the week.

Gatland turns up heat on England ahead of Six Nations clash

Wales coach Warren Gatland has begun the war of words with England ahead of their opening Six Nations clash in Cardiff on February 4th.

The game is vital to forging the direction of their respective Six Nations campaigns and whether intentional or not Gatland – who deliberately kept quiet about the opposition last year - struckthe first psychological blow by highlighting what he sees as England's weak links, with Northampton hooker Dylan Hartley bearing the brunt of his criticism.

"Hartley always seems to have a lot to say for himself, but we will see what he's got next week. Some of what he said was responsible for Richie Rees being banned for a lengthy period, yet he wasn't prepared to step outside with Gareth Williams when he was invited to do so. So we'll see how he fronts up on February 4," he said.

"I saw him go to pieces at Leicester a few weeks ago and again on Saturday night. It just shows people can crack under pressure."

It is perhaps no surprise that Hartley has been targeted given his run-ins with Welsh players so far this season, something fans of livescore goalwire rugby will no doubt remember.

He was involved in two ugly incidents in consecutive Northampton v Cardiff Heineken Cup games. He was sin-binned in game one after fighting with Gareth Williams before carrying on the scrap in the return game - an incident that eventually saw Williams' team-mate Rees banned for 12 weeks for making contact with Hartley's eye area.

It will be interesting to see how England coach Martin Johnson responds to Gatland's outbursts as he will no doubt be quizzed on it the next time he faces the media and it will provide a nice preamble to the real action that fans will no doubt follow on the livescores goalwire.

If he bites then it will only add to the feeling of expectation ahead of the huge clash in just over a week's time.

Kenya Cup - Week 12

Well, Mwamba ran out of steam, the rest just cruised, and amazingly, a second draw in as many games between the same teams! Sets the stage for a furious relegation battle and maybe, just maybe one of these will decide the destination of the Kenya Cup itself. The table remains unchanged for this week.

Do have a great week.

Weekend Games

A bit late but here we go. Top billing is Harlequins vs. Mwamba at RFUEA grounds, Kenya Commercial Bank vs. Nondescripts in Ruaraka, Impala vs. Strathmore at Impala and Nakuru RFC vs. Mean Machine in Nakuru.

The cracker on Ngong' Road will be evenly matched throughout. The fitter forwards will carry the day in that battle and I'd give Mwamba. The backs will also be a fierce battle that I expect to be drawn. The goal kickers will win this one and I think this will go to Quins. Win by 9 points. KCB will continue the route of Nondies with 15 plus points, Impala will also continue the education of Strathmore and Machine will remain winless this season, Nakuru by 10.

Do have a good weekend.

Robinson names Scotland squad

Andy Robinson has named his 32-man squad that will take part in a three day training camp at St Andrews before next month's Six Nations. The head coach has picked three uncapped players in the squad, the trio have been promoted from Scotland's A side that beat the USA in November. The three are 23 year old Bath back Jack Cuthbert, 24 year old prop Jon Welsh and 20 year old loose forward Robert Harley. Robinson will be taking a close look at the trio ahead of naming his final squad that will line-up against France on February 5th.

Returning to the squad after missing the autumn test series is Johnnie Beattie, after the number eight recovered from shoulder surgery. He'll be joined by Simon Danielli, who returns from a similar injury to Beattie and also missed the November internationals. Injury has robbed Robinson of the services of Chris Cusiter, Graeme Morrison, Alasdair Dickinson, Jim Hamilton and Phil Godman, who will all miss out on the tournament and the 6 Nations betting suggests they now face an uphill struggle.

Last year's tournament was another mixed bag for the Scots, losses against Italy, France and Wales were followed by a draw against England, before finishing strongly to narrowly beat Ireland in the final match. Since then Robinson has found some consistency and Scotland had a good year beating Argentina away twice before beating Samoa and world champions South Africa.

If Scotland get stop losing to Italy and not take so long to settle in the tournament, then they could be a dark horse for success this year.

Johnson deals with another injury blow

England head coach Martin Johnson has been dealt another major injury blow to his squad, with the news that captain Lewis Moody looks set to miss out on his side's first three matches in next month's Six Nations with a knee injury. The flanker suffered the knee ligament injury after an hour of Bath's 55-16 Heineken Cup win over Aironi and tests have revealed the full extent of the injury. Anyone looking to place Six Nations 2011 rugby bets should remember this when looking where to place their money.

The loss of Moody is the latest blow to England's forward pack which has already lost second-row Courtney Lawes and flanker Tom Croft with injury and Dave Attwood through his nine week ban for stamping. Johnson made it clear that losing Moody is a big blow but the coach is confident of finding a suitable replacement.

"It is always disappointing to lose a player and leader of Lewis' calibre but as I have consistently said, good teams adapt to injuries and that is what we intend to do," the coach said.

With the skipper looking likely to miss games against Wales, Italy and France, Johnson will need to name a new skipper until Moody returns and the Six Nations rugby betting suggests his choice could be crucial. Harlequins number eight Nick Easter and Gloucester centre Mike Tindall will be the two most likely candidates for the job, both are definitely experienced enough to step up.

Johnson will name a replacement for Moody later this month and the new skipper will be announced a week before their opening game of tournament against Wales on February 5th. Whoever gets the nod will have some pretty big boots to fill though.

Williams not afraid to do it his way

New Zealand Centre Sonny Bill Williams has insisted he will make his own mind up over his career goals after media speculation regarding his future in rugby union.
Williams caught the attention of the public after a string of excellent performances in New Zealand’s tour of the Northern Hemisphere, but the exciting Canterbury Crusaders centre has raised doubt over his future after perusing a career in professional boxing.

Press reports also suggest Williams has been offered a return to rugby league by actor Russell Crowe, who co-owns the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Williams has fought twice so far and will step into the ring again against Australian Scott Lewis on January 29th, just a few weeks before the beginning of the Super15 season.

But Williams insists he has learnt quickly during his short career and will not be rushed into making any decisions.

“'I am my own man now, I can think for myself, whereas when I was 20, 21, I always wanted to please others.” Williams commented.

The rugby league convert rose to prominence after switching from NRL side Bulldogs to join Jonny Wilkinson at Toulon.

His impressive performances for the French side and his current team the Crusaders were rewarded with a place in Graham Henry’s squad to tour the Northern Hemisphere in the autumn, where he established himself in the side.

He is expected to play a crucial role in his country’s pursuit of their second World Cup win later in the year. He will become a free agent after the tournament and is expected to spark a bidding war amongst the top clubs across the world.

Kenya Name Tough Squad for Wellington

Kenya have named a stronger squad to tackle the third leg of the HSBC World Sevens Circuit in Wellington in slightly over ten days time. The perennial problem of unavailability has reared its head but the squad is much stronger than the one that took part in the first two legs.

The Squad comprises

2. Sidney Ashioya ( Kenya Harlequin FC)

3. Colins Injera (Mwamba RFC)

4. Biko Adema (Nondescript RUFC)

5. Leon Adongo (Kenya Harlequin FC)

6.Andrew Amonde (Kenya Commercial Bank)

7.Gibson Weru (Nakuru RFC)

8.Brian Nyikuli (Impala RFC)

9.Patrice Agunda (Kenya Harlequin FC)

10.Wilson K'Opondo (Kenya Harlequin FC)

11.Oscar Ouma (Nakuru RFC)

12. Peter Ocholla (Impala RFC)

13.Lawrence Buyachi (Impala RFC)

14. Lavin Asego (Mwamba RFC)

We wish them the best of luck.

IRB 7's: Kenya 7's hopes to bounce back and collect points as Kayange speaks

With three weeks to go before the third leg of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Seven circuit resumes in New Zealand next month, Kenya's captain Humphrey Khayange is upbeat the underdog team will put in a show worth putting the African side in the main cup.

The East African nation registered a poor performance in the first two legs in Dubai and George (South Africa), to what the captain attributed to poor decision making and basic errors.

"That is history now. The team has done more to strengthen and has seen several players spend more time in the gym trying to improve our conditioning levels," said Khayange.

Kenya Rugby Union has since re-signed up conditioning coach Geoffrey Kimani to help in shaping up the team and compliment head coach Benjamin Ayimba.

"If we get our strength back then everything will be in place," said Khayange.

Kenya has been grouped in Pool C alongside giants Samoa, Australia and Tonga for the New Zealand leg which will be held on February 4-5 while the draw for the Las Vegas leg, which will be coming later from February 12-13, is yet to be released.

Though he wants to lift the main cup, Khayange was realistic and cautioned Kenya 7's fans and fanatics from expecting much, saying they could continue experiencing low moments with several key players set to miss either both or one of the third or fourth legs.

"We are rebuilding and I want to be realistic. It is hard to promise sudden improvement in results without first getting the required consistency and endurance to weather the storm tournament after tournament," said Khayange.

Kenya an amateur side has its players balancing between playing and career development.

It hence came as no surprise when some became unavailable because of job commitments requested to be omitted from the selection. This coupled with injuries among other issues could lock out key players, forcing Ayimba to seek for replacements from his wide selection reservoir.

Ayimba will name his final squad on Tuesday but it has been confirmed that former captain Innocent Simiyu, Ben Nyambu and Lavin Asego have work commitments while speedster Collins Injera has personal problems and has requested for permission to remain behind.

However, both Injera and Asego will be available for Las Vegas leg. Also missing will be David Ambunya, who made his debut in Dubai and George.

Ambunya has opted to pursue his education and will be jetting out to study at the Cape Town University while burly Gray Cullen, has suffered a career-threatening back injury.

Doctors have advised Cullen, who staged a superlative debut for Kenya at Delhi Commonwealth Games in India, to stay away from any contact sports after being diagnosed with a spinal code injury.

The good news is Victor Oduor-Opong is back and could be a surprise selection in the team together with rookie Oscar Ouma.

Kenya got its campaign to a slow start, winning the Shield in Dubai after beating France 26-0. This was after a 19-12 victory over Portugal in the semis.

Kenya was relegated to Bowl after they crushed to Samoa 7-26 and Wales 12-17, meaning that their 31-19 win over Arabian Gulf proved futile.

Kenya's awful run in Dubai was stretched to George Sevens where they lost 5-14 to Zimbabwe in the Shield final after having beaten Namibia 41-0 in the semis.

They lost all their pool matches to New Zealand (0-47), England (5-21) and Russia (5-34), a worse performance in recent history.

Can France keep their focus?

Ask a neutral which tie he'd most like to see in the World Cup and there's a good chance the answer will be France versus New Zealand. France, unpredictable and inconsistently exciting, against the team by whose standards all others are measured. This year there is no danger of the two not meeting - they've been drawn together in Pool A. They could meet again in the final, as happened with England and South Africa four years ago.

The biggest danger for France in their World Cup group will be boredom. The French, like their supporters, are not prone to get overexcited, and they will not need to be at their best to see off Tonga, Canada and Japan. They have little incentive to beat New Zealand, given that the dubious reward is a probable quarter-final against the losers of the England-Argentina clash.

As defending Six Nations champions and winners of the Grand Slam last year, the only way France can go is down, but expect them to do so in style. Sure they'll lose a game, but who knows which one? But there are two things France need to show and anyone looking to bet on rugby union action should keep an eye out for them.

Firstly, can France beat England? They have once or twice recently, more often in Paris, and not in the World Cup. The trip to Twickenham is an ideal time to make a statement, although the Six Nations betting tips suggest it won't be easy.

And secondly, have they still got it? Have France still got what only France have ever really had: the ability to comprehensively outplay any team on the planet, even New Zealand – especially New Zealand – for about 20 or 30 minutes, just long enough to turn any game on its head? We may see it at some point in the Six Nations. We may not. Just don't expect it in a meaningless World Cup pool match.

Kenya Cup - Week 11

Gets more interesting as we go along. Mwamba proving to be a formidable force in the longer code, Impala keeping the heat on Quins, and is this the beginning of a spectacular collapse by Quins? The league table remains unchanged at the top but Nakuru takes control of the middle order. Will they be the dark horse to decide the destination of the league cup? Are the death knells sounding for Machine? A few more weeks and we will know.

Do have a good week.

Weekend Games

Kenya Cup rugby action continues in this last leg of the league. Fast rising Mwamba will host Kenya Commercial Bank, Impala travel to the UON grounds to face fast fading Mean Machine, Kenya Harlequins are away to perennial rivals Nondescripts at Jamhuri Park and Strathmore will are at home against Nakuru.

The form book seeming to be out of the window, all eyes will be on the Mwamba/KCB match to see if we are truly seeing a resurgence of Mwamba, or just a flash in the pan. I'm tempted to give this one to Mwamba by 8. The forwards battle will be fairly even with KCB getting the edge. But I feel KCB will struggle to contain the Mwamba backs and that is where the difference will come. Impala will run riot over Machine, and once more I see Quins struggle against Nondies initially before running away with it. It is a known fact that the one game Nondies trains hard for is Quins and they will have done just that. But their consistency will come to haunt them and see them fade away. Strathmore just don't seem to have it and will lose to Nakuru by 10 points.

Results here after the matches, hopefully. Do have a good weekend and enjoy your rugby.

Nile Special Uganda Premier Rubgy Union League Set for Kickoff

The 2011 Nile Special Premier Rugby Union League kicks off this weekend at 4 different venues in Kampala and Jinja.Last season MTN Heathens were run away leaders of the league with only one loss, G4S Pirates came second with UTL Kobs a close third. Entebbe Mongers, Rhinos, Impis, Nile and Buffaloes completed the rest of the table in that order.

In the Nile Special Press conference for the 2011 league the sponsors confirmed there will be UShs 11.5 million in cash prizes this year for all top performers with the league winners walking away with Ushs 5 million cash, runners-up Ushs 3.5 million, MVP and fair team play Ushs 1 million while golden boot and top try scorer will share Ushs 1 million. Nile Special will also provide playing kit for all the Premier league clubs as part of their Ushs 168 million sponsorship package for the league this year. Nile Special are also set to continue their partnership with Fanzone in activation of the league games a bid that is aimed at creating a greater connection to the fans of the games for all ages, shapes and sizes.

MTN Heathens vs Toyota Buffaloes

Muzei Gaso in Charge, can he still handle!!!
The scores in this fixture last year was a resounding 52-09 win for Heathens that set the tone for the rest of their season. Though this derby is always expected to be a one sided affair it has never been short of drama and passion as big brother takes on little brother. MTN Heathens had a poor end to their season with many injuries and fatigue that has affected their usually well attended and physical off season preparations. Heathens worrying off season form continued with failure to honour a request to host Kenyan champions Harlequins and Super Cup opponents Kobs due to unavailability of players.

Despite this Heathens are expected to still be able to secure a comfortable win over Buffaloes. Under U19 Safari 7′s winning coach Otte Omunyide appears to have gone AWOL and former KK Stallions coach Andrew Owor will be at the helm of the youngest side in the league with many fresh 18 year olds from their junior side Buffaloes 2 waiting to get a baptism of fire in the Nile special premier league as they look to change their fortunes. Heathens notable signings are former national team fly half Joel Kimuli from Pirates, U19 national team fly half Jasper Bascut Ochen from Buffaloes and former Heathen Dennis Mulo from Impis.

Prediction: Heathens win by 30 points

Nile vs G4S Pirates

This fixture last year was won by Pirates 34-10.What was shocking was hitherto hapless whipping boys Nile managed to put 2 tries past Pirates and at half time had matched the Kampala based team. Nile showed a small improvement with a lot of tenacity and rough play making them an awkward team to face for most sides. Under Canadian coach player Joe Scale they eventually ended the league in 7th position climbing form 8th position the previous year. Pirates once again have been the busiest in the transfer window and have made several administrative changes in their quest for a first ever league title.

Coach Sam Ahamya has been relieved of his duties and replaced by Brian Makalama whom many have taunted as the person most likely to land them their first league silverware. Pirates have signed many players from Impis including Kenyan duo Marlon Ondiegi, Juma Hillary, Rodney ”Tirod” Turyatemba , Rugumayo Wiggy among others. Nile on the other hand have lost many players.

Prediction: Pirates should have an easy away win by over 50 points away in Jinja

Rhinos vs UTL Kobs

In this fixture last year Kobs romped to an easy 32 nil win.Rhinos may have lost in the first round but their steady improvement showed as Kobs only managed a 15-3 win in the return fixture. Rhinos finished the league like a steam train climbing to 5th position. However Rhino’s lack of sponsorship saw them struggle the rest of the season and it is uncertain which Rhinos will show up this weekend. Kobs ended the season in 3rd position but finished their calendar year on a high winning the Uganda Cup and reaching the Mak Hima 10s finals.

They also defeated a select barbarians side to win the Super Cup.Kobs have prepared very well in the off season and are talking big about reclaiming the league they lost to Heathens in 2009. Under new coach Ronnie Lutakome-who replaced Herbert Wafula-there has been a breath of fresh air and with talk of former coach Fred ‘Garlic’ Mudoola returning from a ban this year there is a new sense of self belief in the KRUFC based club. Kobs notable new signing is lock Ambrose Kakuru from Entebbe Mongers and sensational Under 19 MVP Justin Kimono from Namilyango College.

Prediction: Kobs should win this contest by 15 points

Makerere Impis vs Entebbe Mongers

Vision Voice sponsored Makerere Impis host the fishermen from Entebbe in what should be the most competitive match this weekend. Mongers triumphed over Impis 16-03 in this delayed match last year. Impis will relish playing infront of their vociferous home fans while the physical Mongers will look to be spoilers. Impis despite loosing many players believe they are still competitive but will have to do something drastic about their lightweight forward line. Mongers on the other hand have landed Sadolin Paints as lead sponsors. Kit and cash money have been promised to the fishermen which should boos their season. In previous seasons Fanzone have subsidized Entebbe Mongers. This fixture may however be postponed as the uinversity students are on holiday

Prediction:This game could go either way but Mongers might edge this one by a penalty.

Murphy Injury concern for Ireland

Irish Full back Geordan Murphy looks set to miss the start of Ireland’s Six Nation campaign after being ruled out for a month with an ankle injury.

The Leicester man picked up the injury playing for the Tigers against Northampton on Saturday – and now looks likely to miss Ireland’s opening fixture of the tournament against Italy.

Fears Murphy has ligament damage could be confirmed after further medical assessment on Wednesday. Murphy may look to target his country’s second game, against France, on the 13th of February, or against Scotland on the 27th.

Murphy, capped 69 times by his country, had been in sparkling form this season for his club side and will be disappointed not to be able to take that form in to the Six Nations for his country.

Leicester’s director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “He certainly won't be fit for this weekend but fingers crossed it won't be too serious. It's really disappointing for Geordan; he was coming in to some good form”.

The news comes as a further blow for Ireland head coach Declan Kidney, who has already seen fellow full back Rob Kearney ruled out of the early stages of the tournament, while forward Jerry Flannery had previously been ruled out with a torn calf muscle.

Kidney is under pressure following a string of disappointing results, but looks to have turned the corner after defeating a rugged Argentina side 29-9.

That win came after a resounding defeat against New Zealand – their formidable opponents in the All Black Jersey were resounding victors 18-38.

The Cork native will hope to emulate his 2009 Grand Slam winning side, but will struggle to replace Murphy in his side.

KRFU needs new strategy for game

In 8 weeks time the KRFU will have either retained or elected a new
Chairman in place of Richard Omwela. After that the game's status quo
will remain the same with nothing really radical in the way the game
of Kenya Rugby is run.

The game has outgrown the current structures is not in doubt. Even the
sports editorial in todays Standard has highlighted some aspects of
it.

KRFU needs to take the bold step and devolve the running of the game
to see the creation of at least 3 or 4 branches/sub-unions to enhance
regional growth. For example the sub-unions that should be set up are
Nairobi, Western, Nyanza, Rift Valley, Schools and Combined. Combined
will take care of Eastern, Central and Coast as they need to show
growth to develop into full sub-unions.

Over to you KRFU and let's see you take the bold step of actually
putting up structures at the grassroots. Only then will Kenya Rugby
have taken a leap into the next level.

Injuries hit the Scotland camp

Scotland's preparations for next month's Six Nations have been handed a blow, with the news that centre Graeme Morrison could miss the whole tournament with a knee injury. The 28-year-old suffered a knee ligament injury playing for Glasgow against Edinburgh just after Christmas and is facing an eight week lay-off.

With Scotland's opening match in the tournament coming on February 5th and their final match on March 19th against Italy, Morrison will struggle to play any part in his country's campaign. The centre has an optimistic view on his chances however and is confident of returning to action in time.

"I like to think of myself as a quick healer. I've done this on the other knee before and I was back before they predicted," he told the BBC.

Scotland will be hoping Morrison is correct in his prediction and that they get the hard-working centre back for the final part of the Six Nations. After an impressive year, Scotland will be going into this tournament thinking they have a real chance of doing better than their token single victory that they usually come with and the Six Nations betting odds reflect this.

Andy Robinson has got this side believing in themselves and Scotland have had a successful year under the former England head coach. In the past 18 months under Robinson, Scotland have recorded back-to-back away wins in Argentina as well as famous victories over Australia and current world champions South Africa.

Weekly Ramble

For want of anything to write, and not to repeat myself, read my Weekly Ramble of close to 2 years ago. Most of the African rugby sports writers are now itching over this and most of what I get on the wires are the plan to split CAR or is it Africa into two. Well I said it then and nothing happened, and now we weep. We are doomed as a continent. And with this as a World Cup year, it has dominantly been on my mind. With Namibia as our sole representative, are they able to effectively represent the rest of Africa? Is that really the best that Africa can do? Can Africa get better given the resources? Would a side like the African Leopards be able to compete? And I still insist, the IRB can do more!

The Rugby World Cup will come and go and four years later, we will be discussing the same thing. That CAR board terms run for four years plays nicely in this cycle and that no change will occur (since the IRB will not support a rival organisation) in this same period means we have no recourse. Secede? The new buzzword in Africa and sounding very attractive to many, and in more ways than one. The right of a people to self determination!

Have a good week.

Johnson set to name Six Nations squad

With the big kick-off less than a month away Martin Johnson is primed to name his England squad for the Six Nations.

A number of names are in contention for the competition, which starts with a clash with Wales in Cardiff on February 4th and fans will be eagerly watching the live match score, hoping they can get off to a good start. England haven't won the Six nations since 2003, when the side then went on to lift the World Cup.

With the RFU proposing sweeping challenges within the rugby administration in order to try and turn England into world champions once more, Johnson knows a strong Six Nations campaign will help the side prepare for this year's World Cup in New Zealand as well as in the long term, the 2015 competition to be held in England. People will be keeping a close eye on all the latest rugby scores during the Six Nations as they look to measure England's' progress.

Gloucester's James-Simpson Daniel is a name on most pundits' lips. The 28-year-old has only won 10 test caps but is arguably in career best form. The 2007/08 player of the year put in a match winning performance for Gloucester against Exeter on Monday, making two tries before scoring one himself, leading to team mate and Scotland captain Rory Lawson to say England would be "foolish" to ignore Simpson-Daniel once more.

Northampton's Tom Wood is also believed to have impressed Johnson when travelled first-hand to see his Saints side take on Leicester last weekend. He is rumoured to have climbed ahead of Stade Francais's James Haskell in the race to replace Tom Croft, who will miss the opening two Six Nations clashes with injury.

He is touted as one for the future, but with long-term building plans the in-thing at the RFU at the moment, I wouldn't be surprised if he Wood finds himself lining up at Cardiff early next month.

Kenya Cup - Week 10

Surprises, or maybe not. I missed one call but close on the rest. The Kenya Cup is now not open for winners, but for spoilers and that is who people will be rooting for in the next six weeks or so. My concern now is the relegation battle, and whether it really is a battle. Some teams seem totally hapless, but that's just my view.

Quins have now opened an 11-point lead at the top and the fight for second and hopefully first is tight between the trio of Impala, Mwamba and KCB. Makes for an interesting few weeks to come.

Do have a good week and do enjoy your rugby.

Kenya Cup Results 8.1.11

Mwamba in clinical win over Impala
Nakuru record first win with victory over Nondies
Quins continue with win over Strathmore Leos
KCB in another massive win Mean Machine

Mwamba 31 Impala 24
Nakuru 18 Nondies 22
Quins 42 Strathmore Leos 7
KCB 60 Mean Machine 24

Trouble in Paradise ? Quins lose second coach

Kenya Harlequins RFC have been seriously jolted by the sudden and
shock resignation of assistant coach Charles Cardovillis. This move
came as a bolt from the blue when Quins have had a flawless first leg
of the Kenya Cup season.

The young coach who narrowly missed out as sevens coach of the year
becomes the second to leave the stable after rookie coach Sidney
Obonyo headed to Mean Machine. Quins were in a disarray this week with
no recognisable coach at the helm leaving the senior players led by
captain Victor Simiyu Sudi taking charge as the head coach holidays in
Seychelles.

Cardovillis's departure leads to speculation that he may have been
approached by KCB as there have been rumours in the recent past that
he and another former Quins coach had been approached to take over
from the now departed Tank at KCB. He also enjoyed an uneasy
relationship with an ambitious senior official at the Quins.

The other school of thought is that he himself wants a stab at the
recently advertised national 15's job and needed to get out at club
level. This directly puts himself in competition with current national
assistant coach and former club boss Edward Kinyany. Cardovillis
enjoys close links with a section of the top brass of the Union.

But in the meantime come spend your free time at Machine with your
former colleague Obonyo.

Is it Paradise Lost or Lost Paradise? Time will tell how Cardovillis
departure will affect Kenya Harlequins.

Weekend Games

And a Happy New Year to you all. The league is not giving us much time to get into stride but here goes.

League leaders Harlequins are away to Strathmore, Mean Machine are at home to KCB, Mwamba host Impala and Nakuru travel to play Nondies. First round form notwithstanding, the long break will be more of a factor methinks. What with festive season traveling and all, I'm sure most clubs have not had smooth training sessions.

MinerData - Quins will labour over Strathmore. The students are fitter and more disciplined. They will still win however by about 10 points. KCB will dominate Machine in the forwards. Given Machine will be quicker but I don't think their winless season is about to end. KCB with a bonus point. The pick of the day will obviously be the Mwamba/Impala game. After succumbing to their largest loss ever in the opening game of the season, Mwamba have only lost one other match and now lie third on the table. They will be no pushover, but I feel their big 4 will be easily neutralised. Impala by 8 on this one.

Lastly I'm tempted to believe the white shirts are confused about what the league is about and with Nakuru on the ascendancy and finding their players after the big raid two seasons ago, I give them this one by a score.

Do have a good weekend and enjoy your rugby.

Kenya Rugby : Breaking News - KCB fire Tank Otieno

KCB Rugby Club have sensationally fired coach Michael 'Tank' Otieno. The club confirmed parting ways with him and replaced him interimly with Howard Okwemba and Derrick Wamalwa. This could not have happened at a worse time for the celebrated former Kenya 15's fullback who was also quietly but ruthlessly dismissed by the KRU from his national 15's head coach post. The coach who was on a Ksh 360,000 per annum contract with KCB will be remembered for having led the club to three successive Kenya Cups 2005-7 the first time they had ever won the title in their 22 year history. Team Manager Wangila Simiyu was not affected by the changes at the club. Wangila who also doubles up as the national team manager has outlived Tank at both levels. KCB lie fourth in the current Kenya Cup standings and feel that Tank has outlived his usefulness at the club. The University of Nairobi PE Lecturer will now weigh his future options.

Kenya Rugby : Australian side Warringah Rats set for maiden Kenyan Tour

Australian side Waringah Rats will play their first game after arrival in Kenya on 6th February 2011 against Chairman’s select at the RFUEA grounds. Their second game will pit them against Kenya A the following Saturday 12th February 2011 again at the RFUEA Grounds. The Warringah Rats have in their ranks players with Super Rugby experience as well as some exciting youngsters. Doubtful that they will send their strongest squad as they look to have in their team for the tour a few retired rugby veterans like dual international Scott Gourley.

Nevertheless it promises to be a fresh breath into Kenya rugby as incoming tours have been all but extinct especially for the fifteens version of the game. Names asoociated with the Warringah Rats founded in 1964 are Wallabbies Pat McCabe, Pek Cowan and Mark Gerrard. Other established names are Sam Harris, Josh Holmes, Brett Sheehan, the Kennedy twins, Katoni Ale and Dan Raymond.

Both Kenya select sides will need to be at their best in order to demonstrate the gains made by the Kenya 15's side currently ranked 32 by the IRB after sterling performances winning the Victoria and Elgon Cups in 2010. The teams selected to play should be 23 years and under in order to give exposure to the upcoming university and club players recently finished school. Kenya A last played under Charles Cardovillis in Tanzania last year. Together with Mitch Ocholla, Eric Situma, Sidney Obonyo and Paul Murunga they should handle the two teams.

Go Kenya A Go Chairmans.

Musical Chairs At CAR Threatens Rugby Development

An informatife piece by Eric Odanga aka Punter

Cracks which have been widening over the years among the executive of the Africa Rugby Confederation and some member countries continued to widen as the International Rugby Board adopted a hands off stance.

The contents of the CAR Constitution has been singularly changed severally to favor the incumbent. No amount of reasoning seems to have succeeded in resolving the current impasse and the world governing body does not want to soil its hands.

The latest scenario is something borrowed from African politicians who would do anything to hold on to power long after they became irrelevant or unpopular.

Documents obtained indicate CAR, against all odds held their General Meeting in Accra, Ghana on December 11, 2010. According to the CAR Constitution, the General Meeting can only be hosted by a Member Union. Minutes from the last General Meeting in Senegal (a Northern Union) in 2008 stated that the next meeting was to be hosted by a Southern Union.

As if this was not enough, CAR which is headed by Abdelaziz Bougja, a Moroccan who lives in Paris, France was rejected by his home country as a delegate and was instead adopted by Senegal.

Similarly, Mauritius presented David Gilbert as their delegate! Gilbert is from Botswana. Bougja who was technically not a delegate flouted the Constitution by changing his Rugby Union from Morocco to Senegal. We now have a President from Morocco with French Citizenship but representing Senegal!

A protest letter by one of the CAR delegates was dismissed by the IRB. In what appeared to be a well planned manoeuvre, Bougja had to look for an Anglophone vice as is stipulated in the ‘Constitution’.

He landed on Dave Gilbert who was was not an official delagate (but registered as delagate from Botswana). Gilbert, the immediate past president of BRFU and a current chairman of a rugby club in Botswana is a South African, working and living in Botswana. Botswana disowned him because the Botswana Rugby Football Union was eyeing the post. Gilbert was then adopted by Mauritius (again, against the Constitution). The BRFU president, Bob Lekan protested and withdrew paving was for Gilbert to be ‘elected’ unopposed.

A joint communique to the CAR secretary general signed by the presidents of Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe Rugby Unions and copied to all CAR Members and IRB’s top brass raised concerns about the General meeting.

A letter from IRB dated November 19, 2010 cleverly sidestepped the issues at hand and partly read: “The IRB does not wish to comment on the interpretation however given confusion arises it would seem that the 14-day period at dispute as not materially affected and member who wishes to attend or participate in the meeting - you have provided no evidence of such disturbance and indeed took almost four months after the notice had been issued to express your concerns.”

A low-toned but stern warning by the IRB in the two-page response is contained in the third last paragraph: “It is worth noting that the business of CAR and its member Unions is the development of rugby in Africa and not creating a mire of administrative and financial issues which may well detract from the central core activities.”

To any Union, this paragraph summarizes the IRB’s hands off stance towards the concerns by some CAR member Unions. The IRB chairman. Head of External and Member Relations, IRB General Manager (Development) were supposed to attend the meeting but did not.

The current scenario is not good for the development of the game in Africa. Member Unions and the executive must respect the Constitution. Dissenting voices within CAR raise genuine concerns which need mediation by the IRB which should invoke Regulation 19 (Mediation) to reach an amicable resolution.

Les anglophones ont été vaincus par les francophones dans celui-ci. Que notre Omwela peut-il faire cette fois autour ? La clôture s'assoyant le fait un perdant sur le continent de l'Afrique aussi

Rugby Ends 2010 In Style As All Stars Win Hemingway Safari 7s Tournament

Happy New 2011. Nigerian rugby ended the year with a big bang with a successful inaugural Hemingway Safari 7's rugby tournament held on Tuesday and Wednesday December 21st and 22nd.

The Nigerian All Stars elite rugby squad beat Barewa RFC by 21 points to 0 points to win the cup tournament, while in a closely fought Plate final Racing RFC of Lagos beat Shell Warri RFC by 19 points to 12 points to go home as winners of the Plate.

The 2 day rugby festival was held at Lagos Polo Club. The first day comprised of a coaching clinic for kids, mini rugby games and a women’s rugby exhibition. The main event occurred on the second day with a hotly contested tournament comprising of 12 teams from Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Edo, Delta and Lagos.

Kayode Oguntayo, CEO of the Nigerian Rugby Football Federation commented on the event, “This is a great way to end a successful rugby calendar year for rugby in Nigeria. The tournament was a great afternoon of quality Nigerian Rugby.”

Following the great development of Nigeria’s inclusion in the Confederation of African Rugby 2011 championships, the tournament Hemingway Safari 7's was a platform for future National team players to showcase their skills.

Trials for the Black Stallions, the Nigerian Rugby team will thus start early in 2011. The success of the Hemingway Safari 7's tournament therefore bodes well for the future of Nigerian rugby in the New Year.

Happy New Year to all Kenya Rugby.

2010 was a unique year and outstandingly rugby survived another year.

The expansion of the Eric Shirley Shield and Universities League was
good for the game especially in West Kenya
The Bamburi Series borne a totally new West Kenya franchise Buffalos
Homeboyz emerged as a fresh breath and won the Eric Shirley Shield
Kisumu Rugby club recovered to finish second behind Homeboyz
The Kenya 7's continued keeping the country's flag high against all

Kenya 15's had a sterling year winning the Victoria Elgon Cup and
rising to rank 32 in the world.
The Kenya Ladies also won their matches against Uganda and had a good

Resignation of selectors
Getting rid of sprints coach and nutrition lady
Secretariat wasting time engaging and politicking in social sites
instead of doing what they are paid to do
Playing in Zimbabwe kit in Dubai. What a shame.

The Ugly
Refusal by chairman to fire Benjamin Ayimba despite sinking ship
Conflict of interest by KRFU officials
Lack of transparency in KRFU affairs
Chairman as part of KFF Harambee Stars Board
Sacking Tank by advertising his job
Not advertising 7's coach and Team Managers 15's and 7's jobs
Assistant 7's coach vanishing act
Tribal composition of KRFU Board and office
Unscruplous and misconduct by General Manager
Trying to fool the country that Kenya 7's kit was in Dar es Salaam,
