Dogged England keep on winning
The added fact the side are still winning despite not hitting top gear has got supporters and players alike brimming with excitement and confidence.
Saturday’s 17-9 win over France at Twickenham was workmanlike but effective and keeps Martin Johnson’s men on course for their first Grand Slam since 2003.
Each win so far has required different attributes in order to come out on top – it was the turn of the backs to come to the fore in what was a gritty win against a battle-hardened French side on Saturday evening. Goalwire livescore fans would have been very pleased.
Jonny Wilkinson certainly sees reasons to be optimistic, and he is best qualified to say so given his starring role in that 2003 World Cup winning team. He feels the foundations are being laid in place for a real shot at lifting the Webb-Ellis once more. Anyone following goalwire live match score will think they have a chance.
For now though the challenge is Scotland, who will be looking to bounce back following 21-18 home defeat to Ireland and avoid falling behind perennial six-nations whipping boys Italy. That win by Declan Kidney’s men means that should they beat Wales – and England do the job against Scotland - they will be the only side standing in England’s way when the two sides meet in Dublin on the final weekend.
The tournament is rapidly gathering pace and there is increasing confidence within the England camp that they can not only win the Six Nations but go all the way in New Zealand in the autumn.

Moneyless Kenya Cup curtains close
is how come no sponsorship has been gotten for both Kenya Cup and the
Eric Shirley Shield.
That the KRFU works hard or gets others to work hard for it to get
sponsorship for some of its events but not its own league is a mystery
of all sorts.
Safaricom, Kenya Airways and Bamburi are just niche sponsors yet the
majority of players in the league countrywide are not impacted by any
of their money.
Something definitely is amiss when it comes to running the league.
Prestigious it is and Pennyless it is. Maybe the need to finish the
Kenya Airways tickets with non-entities travelling and hobnobbing at
IRB Sevens events is more important to the KRFU.
Weekend Games
In the derby despite the feeling of loss and the game being in vain, Machine will put up a good fight. If they keep their composure and not try to match Strathmore's open play, they should pip them by a couple of points. Impala will still be smarting from their fourth loss of the season and I don't see them accepting another one, so I give them this over Nakuru by 10. Having received the trophy two weeks ago, there seems to be no motivation for Quins whilst KCB have been on the up and up. I give KCB this by 8 points. Mwamba will annihilate Nondies...
Do have a good weekend and enjoy your rugby. Commiserations to Mean Machine but I believe a good wake up call.

Mean Machine relegated to ESS
sinking sands....'
The dreaded moment never imagined never seen coming is here. Many a
poet would struggle to put it into prose and the founders would lie in
shock.
Mean Machine Rugby ClUb founded 1977 champions 77, 90 and 91 has been
confirmed relegated from the Kenya Cup for the first time ever. They
will play in the second division Eric Shirley Shield next season.
Sadness engulfs this great name.
Take heart and we shall bounce back to the summit again. Mwamba,
Impala, Quins, Mombasa and Nakuru have trodden that path before and in
true ESCHUMA ABSOLUT style we shall bounce back.
NB. Machine Old Boys (MOB) please turn out please in large numbers for
stakeholders meeting charting the way forward for Machine.

Ferris misses out of Scotland game
Ireland's last match was the narrow 22-25 loss to France two weeks ago. It was a serious improvement on their opening performance against Italy but the defeat was a devastating blow to their title ambitions. The emphasis for Ireland will now be on finishing the tournament strongly and setting themselves up well for the World Cup later on in the year and anyone looking to place Six Nations 2011 rugby bets should remember this.
There is good news for Kidney in the injury department with the news that winger Tommy Bowe will be back in contention for the trip to Scotland following his own knee troubles. The Ospreys man will be a welcome attacking threat to the Irish back line as well as adding his significant defensive capabilities and the Six Nations rugby betting indicates he could have an impact on the game.
Ireland will face a Scotland side who looked poor in their loss to Wales in their last match and Andy Robinson will be desperate to see a significant improvement. The visitors will go into the match as favourites and Scotland will be hoping to bring the home fans something to smile about after the Wales game.

Weekend Games
My calls... Despite great leaps and bounds shown be Machine, I do not think Nondies will take this one lying down as they have in the last few matches and will rise to the challenge. Nondies by 8. Mwamba will also restore the order and overcome Strathmore by 10 points. Quins have nothing to lost except pride in this fixture but Impala also appear rudderless at the moment. Quins will pip them in a very open and fast flowing match by 3 points. KCB are on a roll and Nakuru are losing their momentum, KCB by 10 in this one.
Do have a good weekend and do enjoy your rugby.

Winner takes all at Twickenham
Experienced back rower Chabal has come off the bench in France's opening two games so far and the former Sale Shark has made it clear that this match is one in which the winner will take it all, something the Six Nations betting reflects.
"When we started the competition, it was to win it. Now I believe the winner of the next round will win the Six Nations. So we will try to do our best and get a result in England," he said.
France will travel to Twickenham on the back of two mixed performances in their opening games. Scotland and Ireland both pushed the reigning champions close so far in this tournament, but France managed to come away from both games with victories and are still on course to retain their grand slam from last year.
England have been playing like a southern hemisphere side in their two games so far, dismantling Wales first before resoundingly spanking the Italians in their second game. In this sort of form, it will take a massive effort from the French to get anything out of the match. England's star man at the moment is obviously Chris Ashton and the French will have to basically man mark the winger to stop his incredible scoring streak.

Henry looks to prepare players for World Cup
Henry caused controversy in 2007 when he withdrew all of his squad from the second half of the Super 14 competition ahead of the competition later that year. His side went on to be knocked out by France in the quarter finals and Henry was on the receiving end of criticism for his handling of his players in an All-Blacks shirt.
The former British and Irish Lions coach has opted to use the same strategy again, but has insisted he will be more proactive in ensuring his players are sharp, but well rested in time for the tournament. He said: “Our biggest challenge is that they've got to be reasonably sharp mentally coming into the World Cup and the Tri Nations prior.”
"If they're tired, it's going to be very difficult. It's keeping them fresh; it's keeping on communicating with them and the Super 15 coaches to see how we can do that” he added.
Henry says he will be in constant contact with Superugby coaches ahead of the tournament in order to monitor his squad to “give them constant feedback on the way they're playing and how we think they can improve their game.”
The newly christened Superrugby, the latest guise of last season’s Super 14 competition will kick-off later this month, with 15 teams from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand competing in the tournament. The Melbourne Reds are the newest addition, and get their campaign under way against the Waratahs on Saturday.

Ashton the hero as England set up titanic clash with France
Eight tries later and Johnson's men were celebrating a fine victory that puts them on course for the Grand Slam as well as setting up a huge clash with current Six Nations champions France in a fortnight's time.
Chris Ashton was again the hero, swallow-diving his way to four tries – the first man to do so in a Five/Six Nations match since 1914 and anyone following the livescore would have been very impressed by his performance.
The records just keep tumbling for a player who only converted to union in 2007. He now has six tries in this year's tournament already - equalling the try-scoring record for one Six Nations campaign held by Will Greenwood and Wales' Shane Williams – and has bagged nine tries in nine Tests since making his international union debut in the 12-10 final Six Nations weekend loss to France last March.
With the French edging out Ireland in a dramatic clash at the Aviva Stadium the stage is set of a clash between the two tournament favourites at Twickenham on February 26th and the latest Six Nations scores suggest it should be an interesting game.
England certainly won't find the space afforded to them against Italy in that encounter, and Ashton will see himself as a marked man following his recent heroics, with his blossoming partnership with
Toby Flood also something the French will seek to contain.
But they have dealt with everything thrown at them so far and have every chance of continuing their good run against Marc Lièvremont's men.
Martin Johnson may not like it, but if we see more Ashton swallow dives in two weeks time round I'm sure it is something he can get used to.
Where now for Ireland?
France were mediocre, even less convincing than in their defeat of Scotland. Ireland had home advantage and led at the interval. They outscored the French by three tries to one and yet somehow they contrived to lose a game that was there for the taking.
Ireland's litany of errors cannot be put down to inexperience. Nor can they say that they were put under any kind of sustained pressure. France did what they needed to do, but they will play more impressive rugby and lose, although it's hard to see them living up to the rugby union odds that made them second favourites for the Championship after that performance.
The Irish now face tricky away fixtures in Edinburgh and Cardiff, before meeting a rampant England side at home. They will do well to get out of this tournament with three victories. Youth is not on their side; as other teams mature, they may find their next three games tough going and they certainly don't look like Six Nations betting tips for the Triple Crown.
Ireland can still salvage some pride. They must do so to avoid entering the World Cup on a run of defeats. Even then, they will need to cut out the basic errors that gifted France points and might jeopardise their World Cup progress.
But soon the men in green will need to find some new blood. The Ireland team is full of wise heads on old legs, and without more balance there will be more defeats in store. Coach Declan Kidney may not have the same wealth of options as some of his counterparts; nevertheless, the time for rebuilding is fast approaching.

Weekend Games
With the current form Quins is displaying, and the depletion of the Nakuru side, I feel Quins will run away with this one by a large score, 10 plus points. The forwards battle will remain lively and Nakuru like attacking from the base so that will keep Quins on toes. I therefore see a close first half before Quins run away with it in the second half.
On the Kenya A, Warringah Rats game, I feel the Rats will be more prepared this time as they now realise that there is rugby in Africa outside of South Africa. Maybe the selectors took this Kenya A thing too seriously as I see no harm in letting a few seasoned players, maybe fringe players of the National team have a go at the Rats. Despite the fact that Kenya A have been training, I do not see them being cohesive enough to beat the Rats. I give this to the Rats by 8 points.
Do have a good weekend and enjoy your rugby.

Coach Howard Okwemba expects a bruising battle from the Australians, noting "we expect a tough fixture...it will be particularly tight in the forwards...we saw them play against Quins last weekend...they were quick and efficient at the break downs...we plan to counter this by taking advantage of our athleticism and confront them with an all out brand of rugby."
Okwemba will be assisted by Dominique Habimana who will double up as the team manager while Joseph Koli is the team physio.

England bring in back-up for Italy
Head coach Martin Johnson has called up winger James Simpson-Daniel and prop Alex Corbisiero to provide cover for a couple of injury concerns in the shape of Nick Abendanon and Tim Payne. Simpson-Daniel will cover Abendanon, who is struggling with a toe injury, while Payne has returned to Wasps with a sternum problem meaning Corbisiero comes in and anyone following the Six Nations rugby betting should remember this.
Johnson will be looking for a better performance than last year's unconvincing 17-12 win against the Italians, which was then followed by two losses in the remaining three games of the tournament allowing France to lift the trophy. Those losses were something of a blessing in disguise for Johnson, who was forced into rethinking his tactics. The free-flowing attacking style that England showed in Cardiff last week was what Johnson implemented following the disappointing Six Nations and so far it looks to be the best decision the former World Cup winning captain has taken in his time in the job.
Tank back in the saddle as Kenya Rugby 15's Coach

Michael (Tank) Otieno has been re-appointed the Kenya 15s Head Coach. Tank successfully steered the Kenya team to an all time high of position 31 in the IRB rankings, last year. In the process, the team gained both the Elgon and Victoria Cups unbeaten. Tank returns to the job at a time the full game is experiencing renewed national interest. This version is clearly coming out of the shadows of its shorter form, rugby 7s.
"I am delighted to take on the onerous challenge of mentoring the national rugby side. I will gladly be working with Edward Kinyany and Charles Ngovi, with whom we had forged quite a close working relationship, as my assistants. This management team will be broad based to take in the input of strength and conditioning, nutrition, medical and other specialists, in recognition of the demands of the modern game, " said Tank.
The assignments of the Kenya 15 for 2011 include the Elgon and Victoria Cups in June and July, as well as a Tier 1 competition November, in Nairobi, against Namibia, Tunisia and Morocco.
Interestingly the KRU went through a whole exercise of advertising for a new head coach and holding interviews. In the end they abandoned the exercise and re-appointed Tank and his assistants. It is hoped the 15's coaching staff will be given attractive contracts as is currently enjoyed by 7's coaching staff led by Benjamin Ayimba.
On the local club scene since leaving KCB, Tank has rejoined Mwamba in an effort to put order in their coaching staff which has undertaken several changes since Edward Rombo stepped down as coach.

Weekend Games
KCB/Impala will be fairly balanced in the forwards, but I give KCB the edge in this division. They may come to rue their inability to utilise that platform as Impala will have the edge in the backs. With the stakes as high as they are, I believe Impala will come away with this one, just due to magnitude of the match and their ability to settle at that level. Impala by 8. Mwamba will beat Machine but not with as high a score as last time, I put it by a solitary score. Strathmore/Nondies looks on paper to be another tight one, but from being number two in the league for some weeks, Strathmore just can't seem to find their feet. Nondies by 10 on this one.
On the Kenya Sevens I wish them well and based on their much improved performances today, I believe they can take the Bowl Competition.
Kenya Harlequins will however play an international friendly against the Warringah Rats from Australia. I can't comment much on this but the Rats will be playing barely twenty four hours after a long trip. Their game will however be a testament to organisation and systems and a lesson for us all. If Quins get awed and watch this, they will lose. However, Quins have been building up steam and this will be a warm up for them for the last three and toughest matches of the league. I therefore believe the match will be a contest and I give this to Rats by 5.
Do have a good day and enjoy your rugby.
How to solve the Hook issue
The decision to play Hook at full-back mean that Lee Bryne will have to settle for a place on the bench despite returning to fitness, while Steve Jones will continue at fly-half with Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies pairing up in the centres. Hook has played at 15 before when Bryne has been injured but he'll surely be eyeing the number 10 jersey and Jones will have to be at the top of his game from the opening match of the tournament. Anyone looking to place a rugby bet on Wales will know that Hook's performance could be key to the side's chances.
Hook's ability to orchestrate play makes him a dangerous fly-half for opposition defences to have to handle but Gatland has gone for Jones' reliability to start the tournament but he will be aware of the threat for his position.
Gatland has made it known Bryne's omission is down in part to his lack of recent game time and the Lions full-back could return for the Scotland game on the 12th with Hook reverting to 10. Wherever he plays, Hook will be able to influence a game and he'll be a key player for Wales as they look to bounce back from their disappointing season so far.

Clash of styles set up mouth-watering Six Nations tie
If the former England Captain is right in asserting it is the Welsh who are under pressure, then his side will have a certain amount of empathy once their rugby boots cross the white line and into the white-hot cauldron at the Millennium Stadium. A Friday night Six Nations opener against Wales with the Millennium Stadium roof potentially closed? England’s battle may lie in their heads rather than their hands and feet.
Aside from the entertaining back-and-forth between Gatland and Johnson, the build-up to the much anticipated match has been dominated by injury. Both sides have been hit at the very heart of any team – the forwards.
Wales will find themselves going up against a historically strong England pack without their British & Irish Lions prop’s Adam Jones and Gethin Jenkins. It’s impossible to underestimate how much of a loss this is to Wales and with the emphasis put on the Welsh forwards by their coach to give Hartley a difficult time, their replacements will find an already difficult task much harder. Paul James and Craig Mitchell will likely be their replacements, and with only 16 caps between them, the front row of Andrew Sheridan, Dylan Hartley and Dan Cole will make their experience count where it remains the most valuable of commodities. The England pack will look to rumble forward and assert themselves early on in the game against James and Mitchell, giving a platform for their newly-freed backline to operate from.
England have problems in their own pack, most notably the second row and the flankers. The loss of Captain Lewis Moody, fellow flanker Tom Croft and Courtney Lawes in the second row will mean England may have to approach the game in a more one-dimensional style. Lawes’s mobility, strength and ability to take the ball through the heart of the Welsh defensive line is key to Ben Youngs getting quick ball to release the English backline. In Moody and Croft they have lost energy at the breakdown and James Haskell will do well to replicate Croft’s success in the lineout. Northampton flanker Tom Wood is set to make his debut in place of Moody. It’s a baptism of fire for the 24-year-old and Moody’s shoes are large ones to fill. With such a loss of creativity and energy England may well be expected to play more conservatively, but will do so at their peril.
The rampaging Andy Powell , revitalised during his time at Wasps will look for every opportunity to get at the English backline, with superstar centre Jamie Roberts hoping to replicate the form that helped him earn a call-up to the British & Irish Lions squad that toured South Africa in 2009. James Hook has proved himself as a world-class player and relishes playing against England, and will hope to repeat his 2007 heroics, where his kicking and running skills were on full display to help Wales on their way to a 27-18 win.
The English back line are not without their virtues either, and the combination of Chris Ashton, Mark Cueto and Ben Foden that set English pulses racing during the Autumn internationals will be hopeful of doing so again against Wales.
If nothing else, the injuries sustained by both squads have served to make the game even more compelling, and while England will look to establish themselves through the forwards and with the boot before unleashing the running talents of their backs, Wales will try and counter-attack and catch England cold with quick turnovers and the pace of Shane Williams and Lee Byrne. In boxing, the phrase “styles makes a fight” is often used to describe two opponents whose attributes together are conducive to an attractive fight -the same can be said of Wales v England.
Weekly Ramble
Looking ahead, this weekend we are in Wellington for the 3rd leg of the HSBC IRB Rugby World Series and I do believe we have a better selected, better prepared team. But will they be up to the task? Will these warriors be able to pull us out of the abyss that we have fallen? Will we at least be able to come out with some points in this round? Are we warming up for the party in Vegas? Methinks we will have a much better performance but the effects of missing several key players in the first two legs will be felt. I do not believe we will be cohesive enough and will fall out of the main cup quarter finals bracket. I however think we will manage a win in the Bowl competition and get some points.. finally. The blooding of
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Clubs prepare to throw out Union
Our sources have it on good authority that the clubs are fed up with the current Namibian Rugby Union (NRU) Executive and want to see a cleanout at Lichtenstein Strasse with immediate effect.
The 26 clubs affiliated to the NRU gathered in Windhoek a fortnight ago and resolved to table a motion of no-confidence in the current NRU Executive.
The troubled union finds itself entangled in a web of damaging accusations, ranging from lack of transparency and mismanagement to financial irregularities.
The cash-strapped union has been unable to service its creditors, leading to non-payment of salaries to its staff members, and water, electricity and communication cuts in recent months.
With debts piling up from awkward angles – the clubs moved swiftly and will table a vote of no-confidence in the current executive in what is interpreted as a desperate move to avert the union’s assets from being attached.
The financially troubled union is loaded with debts of close to five million dollars with Trustco ready to pounce on the union as the company seeks to recover monies loaned to the union of close to four million dollars.
An outstanding amount of N$880 000 is due to Safari Hotel for services rendered during the hosting of the NRU International Sevens Rugby Tournament.
Sources close the NRU also revealed that the IRB has taken heed of the problems within Namibian rugby and have subsequently suspended funding to the union with immediate effect.
A four-member IRB delegation led by Cliffie Booysen is expected in Windhoek. The irked rugby heavyweights will seek an audience with members of the line ministry and other relevant stakeholders to get to the root of the problem.
NRU has suspended its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sakkie Mouton with “full pay” in December last year after the motor-mouth rugby administrator spilled the beans over the shoddy dealings within the hierarchy of Namibian rugby.
Wood faces tough debut
But that is the task facing Northampton flanker Tom Wood who has been named in Martin Johnson's starting XV for Friday night's titanic tussle. Fans will be keeping a close eye on the live score goalwire and Wood will be under a lot of pressure.
The former Worcester star wasn't in the original squad but was promoted from the Saxons side and comes in for the injured Tom Croft.
Louis Deacon and James Haskell are also recalled to the pack in three changes made by Johnson from the side beaten 21-11 by South Africa on November 27, with Mike Tindall set to captain the side in place of the injured Lewis Moody.
But it is the selection of Wood though that is causing the most headlines as the media rush to compare him to Matthew Tait, who made his debut in Cardiff in 2005.
Tait was given a torrid time by the home side, with Gavin Henson in particular in storming form as the Welsh put themselves on course for a grand slam. Tait was promptly dropped and only resurfaced on the international scene more than a year later. Wood is under pressure before he has even laced his boots.
It is eight years and counting since England last achieved a Six Nations Grand Slam, with a World Cup final appearance in 2007 the only real high point in what has been a period of decline since that magic moment in Sydney in 2003 and anyone following the live rugby scores will know this.
However, the performance and result against Australia in the Autumn internationals gave reasons for optimism. A good start here - with three Twickenham matches in a row to follow – should put England in a great position to finally end their Six Nations drought.
